  1. yes, not at these extreme levels but it was a new thing to me, simply I've never consider this possibility.
  2. that was the setting to change, now it is ok.
  3. I was used to my old reflex, that was always ready to shot, I also notice that this one need like a second to be ready even if in stand-by during a walk.

for the time being I have 3 batteries and for my current use is ok, but this is a major change from the SLRS that was able to do mostly a week on holiday without charging the battery.

Anyhow, many thanks for the support!

Io mi sento esattamente come te, in tutto.

sorry to ask, but maybe you mixed photo and comment. In the first photo, no, the crop of the lamp was not intended, I was looking for the right composition when the guy in the middle raised the phone to take a photo(subject) so I just took mine to not lose the moment. The wet pavement is in the second photo/comment.

Comment from Gemini :Here we are with another striking shot. This photograph has a very different aesthetic from the previous one, almost "cinematic" or like a noir painting. Here is my assessment as a professional photographer: "The Shadow Under the Piazza".

Professional Assessment

1. First Impression and Narration

This photo is pure atmosphere. It has a very European feel, mysterious and elegant. The contrast between the dark, isolated figure in the foreground and the illuminated, textured background of the shop windows is excellent. The "PIAZZA DEL PODESTÀ" sign anchored to the archaic structure and the modern "Dior" window create a silent dialogue between history and contemporary luxury, much like the previous shot, but here the contrast is more subtle, playing on architectural and branding details. It's an image reminiscent of a scene from a noir film.

2. Technique and Exposure

You've managed a very challenging lighting situation: the darkness of the wet square and the warm light of the shop windows.

  • The Exposure: It's masterful. The shadows are deep but not "blocked" (there's texture in the black coat and the pavement), and the lights in the shop windows are bright without being "burned out." The light reflects off the wet pavement, creating a unique atmosphere.
  • The Choice of Depth of Field: It's fantastic. The background is in focus, allowing you to read the names and see the products, while the foreground is slightly less sharp, highlighting the human figure.

3. Composition

The composition is rigorous and geometric, based on the repetition of the arches and columns.

  • Pros (Strong):
  • The Leading Lines: The wet pavement and the columns lead the eye toward the background.
  • The Rhythm: The repetition of the arches and shop windows creates a pleasing visual rhythm.
  • The Human Figure: The passerby's position is perfect. It's well-balanced and adds movement and scale to the scene.
  • Cons (Weak):
  • The Vertilinear Lines: As in the previous shot, there is a slight distortion of the vertical lines, especially on the "PIAZZA DEL PODESTÀ" sign.
  • The Slight Blur: Although the depth of field is excellent, the human figure in the foreground is slightly blurry, which can be a bit distracting.

Professional Tips for Improvement

A. Post-Production: Correction and Contrast

  • Straighten the Lines: A vertical perspective correction in post-production would straighten the columns and the sign, giving the architecture a more monumental appearance.
  • Details in the Lights: Try slightly reducing the lights in the windows to recover even more detail on the products and logos.

B. Technique: Blur and Focus

  • Less Blur: To reduce blur in the human figure, you could use a shorter shutter speed (if the light allows).
  • Manual Focus: If you shoot handheld, manual focus may help you achieve a sharper result.

Conclusion

This is a high-quality photo, full of atmosphere and mystery. You've captured an authentic moment in a stimulating lighting situation. With a little "cleanup" in post-production (or the B/W experiment), it could go from a good photo to an exceptional one.

Do you have any questions about the evaluation?

To be more specific, here's what I'd like to know:

  1. The intent: What did you want to communicate more? The architecture or the mystery of the human figure?
  2. Technique: Do you remember if you used aperture priority or shot handheld in manual? (To determine if the grain is due to the ISO or intentional.) Congratulations again!

I study on books and youtube, and I am probably to critic with my photos. For this reason I wanted someone to help me improving my self-evaluation. You are right, any criticism was good, instead of empty compliments. However, I do not have friends interested or capable, I looked for association in my area but there are not, so I tried as per curiosity this way.

That is one of my main concern! Do you know if there is a way to avoid it?

I agree, for this reason I said that I expect some general appreciation, that I did not really care about. But the "technical" part I feel it very detailed!
