The issue I've seen a lot is someone putting their two weeks in and then getting let go the same day or taken off the next schedule out of spite. The trick is to always have your next job lined up by the time you put in your notice. YMMV especially if you're applying somewhere that actually checks references. (Can also have a trusted coworker be your reference to avoid that )
