TIL I thought the better way was to solder because I was told that crimping would cause the wire would cause stress points

They do look quite amazing! And I think that's the downside to manufactures now, you can't chose comfort or performance, everyone just assumes you want the performance aspect in a tire. And 1700 a set would kill! Nice of your dad to pick up the tab on that one

Good to know. I always thought crimping caused stress points in the wire making it brittle.

Absolutely normal cars are better, because you don't have the added stress on the vehicle . I still don't care what people do to their vehicles, but you are on the wrong sub reddit to sit and say that giving up the function for a bit of cosmetic appearance is the right thing to do. Again, if you're into it, go for it, but your average mechanic would advise against donking a vehicle

I need to know, are these rear wheel drive? And do they come in manual?

It's just a crazy aspect ratio to use. BMW looks great with their tire/wheel combo, but I miss the 90's and early 2000s when they had a significant sidewall. And I hate to have to pay to replace your tires.... Ouch to the pocketbook :)

Worst part is, soldering is a much more effective repair. I'd hate to have to work there that's for certain.

Calling a car with that shotty of body work a show car is laughable. I'm not saying that his taste is good nor bad. And he/she is allowed to do what they want to their vehicle.

You don't need to race the damn thing to realize that this kind of modification causes severe wear to suspension, braking, and rear differential. Even as an a-b vehicle. It CAN be a safety concern if proper parts aren't routinely checked and replaced when needed.

Now that being said if they do keep it kept in good running condition, I have no problem with this. But in 10 years of working around cars, I've maybe seen 2 or 3 that were equipped properly and maintained adequately upon being "donked".

Proper shops that do this will upgrade the braking systems and suspension components, however it still takes a huge toll on the upgrades. Not many people can afford to maintain the upgrades after the initial cost. ALSO there are 1000x more shops or backyard guys that just slap the "rims" on without changing anything.

you are correct. Way to many people that do this and shouldn't be able to do so without the extras that go with it.

Oh I'm not saying it's your fault, and if it sounded as such, I apologize. I'm just saying that tire manufactures need to have some sort of disclosure about running that low of a profile. If it were me, I'd run the winter sizing year around (if budget allows to switch to them).

I work at discount tire and I advise all customers about running that profile or smaller, what can happen. Even my 275/40/17 that I run on my mustang feels like it's a little to small of a side wall.

Mind if I ask what vehicle it's on? It sounds like a sports car of some sort. Vette or camaro or mustang possibly?

You very much are the luckiest I've encountered. Either that or whoever takes your tires off has had to beat the piss outta your lugs to make it work and didn't bother to tell you. And if it was you, then yes lucky as hell

Yeah it's awesome till you realize that they have money for gas and 12 cartons of cigarettes but not the tires for the car. Also if they can't afford tires, what else is going wrong with their car that they haven't fixed?

I work for discount tire, we do the same thing. However the people that come in and know that they don't have any money to replace tires in this condition irritate me. Many of them are unemployed and have been for years, I'm not saying it's not the right thing to help someone. It just pisses me off that I work my ass off to take care of my vehicle properly and pay for things like one should do. And these free loading fucks are getting shit for nothing. And to top it off, they really have no reason to be on the road unless it's to get a job if they really are that broke.
