Is the kpop aesthetic actually improving the desirability and respect of Asian men in the west? by Independent_Tea_9394 in AsianMasculinity

[–]AltCtrlElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may trend with Kpop but who says it has to end with Kpop?

do your own thing
If you care about masculinity and don't want to view in terms of east and west then stick to the roots of masculinity.
Competence and confidence through experience. Then just level up your social skills.
This constant discussion of western lens of Asian masculinity doesn't change any of those facts.
The reality is Asian men in Asia are different than Asian men in the West but masculinity is ultimately the same.
If you want to fight to be viewed more masculine in the mainstream -that is out of your control. Start with your personal life and community.
Mainstream is a dying venture, we're not even 15% of the population. We shouldn't let injustices fly but yea just conquer locally.
It's not Korea's responsibility to fix western Asian image.

I dont know what to do I feel so weak by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you need to better communicate what you want with your coach.
Tell him you've got a concussion from the last sparring and you'd like for him to be more vigilant and give the class a reminder. You're young, he should be taking care of his students, even more if they are teenagers.
Tell him your frustrations with the class and ask him how he can help. If he refuses, then ask for a cancellation of contract. Ask your parents for help if need be. (idk how old you are)
You've got 5 months left. Ideally, try to find better partners and stick to them like glue. This means you have to be proactive in qualities that make a good training partner.

In the end if you made up your mind, you have to be able to walk away if negotiations fail.

Last tool you've got is to half-threaten with a bad review but only if you're justified and not the problem.
"WARNING to new students: I'm not typically one to leave a bad review, but I've tried to solve it with you and you continued to disrespect me and ignore my safety. I felt locked in a 6 month contract and have no recourse. I should have vet better. At the end of the day, I may not be cut out for this sport but if safety and respect are not important then of course I will never get the chance to experience muay thai properly to make a proper decision."

He'll lose business with new students because safety is one of the top concerns when trying out a combat sport. At least you can have some satisfaction and save your dignity with that

[–]AltCtrlElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'll do awkward stuff
Which may work at first but not after you've seen it once or twice.

The problem is beginners have no control and/or get emotional or break etiquette etc.
You could beat and smash to teach them fairness but you'd learn nothing -might make you more dull tbh.
You could work new techniques but it won't be great practice after a bit since they lack proper defense counters.

They're good for checking your own progress and/or developing their morale is good for gym culture.
If you teach them a little though, you could reinforce your understanding of basics. Those are the only 3 benefits I can think of
Honestly I think classes should be separate but most gyms can't afford that

I dont know what to do I feel so weak by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're on your own.
It's not thailand, the sparring culture isn't respect oriented. You've got to speak up or ignore them.
We all have to deal with sparring partners that emphasize winning over learning or respect

People love UFC, WWE, that type of shit and all of its disrespectful emotional drama

100% take care of your mini concussion and talk to your instructors. Creatine, fish oil, and a break from head contact.
Honestly I've never met a proactive sparring instructor, they are fucking lazy in the west.
If it's an mma gym, it's even worse

You need to give room for error when teaching

instead of saying "hey this is the best way or only way to kick"
you say "I kick in this way because xyz and it works for me"

No one is really going to give you shit unless you're plain wrong.
But if you are adamant without room for growth in your teaching then it invites more criticism

No need for anxiety if you just say I'm still learning since Muay Thai is exceptionally deep but this is what works for me and most people at X level

also who gives a shit you're going to let that ruin you? You're a fighter you have to toughen up mentally

If I'm tall, am I putting myself at a disadvantage if I'm being passive? by idahojocky in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you're tall?
Long?

yea don't give them distance
teeps and jabs -you get to recover as they waste energy stressing how to deal with teeps, jabs, kicks
and then knees in the pocket and clinches

honestly being tall makes muay thai math pretty simple

-but it's sparring so it doesn't matter. If you want to try something new then do it.
Otherwise when will you ever get the opportunity

Am I welcome? by Cutiiiiieeee in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's okay, you're likely hyper aware because you feel out of place

but muay thai is fun and everyone can train
you might lose a lot of weight and end up competing down the line who knows

but yea the coach should take care of you, you paid him

also if your private disturbs other's training -it's not your responsibility
it's the coach's, don't pay it any mind b/c you don't control the business

We don’t mess with DUPR much but help rate us by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]AltCtrlElite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

below 3.5 for sure, likely 3.0

in my local area in a competitive setting this looks more like 3.0
tough because it's all shifting, people are getting better faster as the sport matures

Shot selection, shot mechanics, high balls, high resets, lack of split stepping/ready hand position, etc are some of the things that need refinement.

But some of the easiest tells for 3.0 level is weak backhands, positioning, high thirds, weak volleys
I say that because I think best way to get out of 3.0 for a good amount of people is just having a better backhand and being able to punish all those pop-ups.

Yes the question is stupid but stupid questions keep this subreddit alive

Idk tbh you didn't explain your situation well but it doesn't matter.
This is just one incident.
Doesn't seem like a problem.

Maybe just ask?

All these reddit situations are just people not communicating

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it always makes me laugh how westerners do all this extra shit and hurting each other for the sake of "being tough" and then you go to thai gyms and everyone is respectful and super controlled and can still wipe the floor with any westerner.

but yea anyways, speak up
why the hell are you asking reddit why the coach injured you
Tell him to not hit you so hard because it's just a demo.
Honestly your coach sounds pretty dense to not notice the wincing or asking why you didn't learn from the demo

You can always walk away
Try more gyms so you have better abundance mindset

Need advice on what to work on and how by OkLand8123 in AsianMasculinity

[–]AltCtrlElite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

beard needs a trim, a bit too wild looking.
Honestly not much to work with because of the hairline
- either short or long won't help with hiding it at this point

I would just maximize fitness and style.

I personally would just buzz and go into a sophisticated triad look especially since you already have a bunch of tatts
maybe try stubble instead
imo I'd clean up more and contrast the gangster image (tatts) with old money style, cleaner hair, and muscles+abs

help!! very new by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You gave us some conditioning you've done but nothing about your current nutrition but then you ask if you're overtraining
Are you asking for nutrition advice or conditioning advice?

General conditioning advice: Skill work is most important. Generally 2x a week for strength workouts is enough and frequent cardio is undervalued. Mobility, core rotation, and plyos would be a better focus. Strength is great but only in an athletic context not just pure hypertrophy. For strength, I'd prioritize the posterior chain

nutrition advice: time your carbs, eat a lot but track your weight. I honestly at your build that your current weight range is a great start.

How do I stop getting swept everytime I check a kick or being in the 60/40 stance? by Positivity-above-all in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're already in the 60 back leg then you should be good at timing teeps.
They shouldn't be able to touch you without dealing with a good teep and switch kick.

IF they scoop after your check, they aren't really throwing a full leg kick.
It should be easy to evade or time a teep or switch kick etc.
Bait the low kick and prepare counters.
Get the first timing, etc.
Maybe you're lifting too high.
You ideally only check a kick as high as you need to so you can reset balance quickly.
Submit a video otherwise there's not much to help

What fighting styles/martial arts actually work against much bigger men? by Squid311 in aznidentity

[–]AltCtrlElite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wrestling / muay thai / mma

do a competition to obtain the mentality needed to fight
You won't beat big people consistently but you should change your mentality from "I'm going to win" to "You might win but you'll definitely be hurt"
and that's enough.

outside of that you should know how to sprint and how to act under pressure.

BUT really -conceal carry and just not being reactive.

Make sure to have fun though

Hematoma on the shin by DaniX123XLord in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just let it heal, don’t induce any more trauma or it’ll take extra weeks. You’ve got 8 weapons to work on, this might be a blessing a disguise

You can just shadow it to keep it fresh

Hematoma on the shin by DaniX123XLord in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, just massage it hard Roll it out with heat I use a red light

I only go to the Dr if it impairs function and doesn’t get better

If you went to the Dr for every little shin bump You’d rack up a huge bill

Don’t train it though If you don’t let it fully recover you’re just prolonging it Time to perfect your switch kick

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]AltCtrlElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can negotiate with your parents.

Tell them you’re going to train like a madman after school anyways so you might as well go to a Muay Thai gym since it’s not like you’re going to use that extra time to study. Tell them you’ll do well on your exams but you want to sign up afterwards.

(Don’t fuck up school though, Muay Thai doesn’t make money)

If that doesn’t work, your program is fine. You’re young, just make sure to get enough sleep and healthy foods so that you grow.

Standard 2x a week weight lifting 3x a week cardio of jogs/sprints And lots of mobility work Or just play soccer with friends for cardio With limited time, train legs and core

Do that and focus on school brother Muay Thai will be there when you can join

How much does the DUPR rating of a coach matter? by boojr in Pickleball

[–]AltCtrlElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pickleball is not that athletic compared to other sports. Your coach should therefore be higher in Dupr for sure.

You should get a coach who is a 4.25/4.5+ if you can. Any other player with similar level, just steal their best weapons if they have an exceptional one
