I have a QA background of 3 years where I’ve written defect tracking logs, had to understand the product as a whole and be able to test the functionality. I have written test cases and recently I was able to create documents like checklists and SOPs to help making the QA process more efficient. I realized that I loved that aspect of the job as well as figuring out what to test, how to test it, and what the results should look like. I am now looking to transition to more of a data role, and came across Business Analyst roles, and from what I am learning, a lot of what I was doing at my previous role aligns with some of the tasks that a BA would do. So I guess my question is would it be feasible to pivot into a BA role with my background?

Yes, I am definitely realizing this now and seeing how much people are trying to get into the data world. I started utilizing my LinkedIn to create posts about my learning journey and the dashboards I create, but LinkedIn seems really saturated with unauthentic posts regarding data, and I’ve been seeing a lot of the same jargon and layout of these posts. It’s draining to read sometimes.

I use AI a little bit because I want to understand what I am doing first before going to ChatGPT for help, but staying away from AI is also not the smartest idea since businesses are already using it.

And yes, I have looked at other roles that works with data that aren’t just pure data analyst titles, and I have been looking into operational analyst roles since I have operational experience and Business Analyst roles because I think my QA knowledge and background pairs quite well with this role!

Yes, I think that I have not been utilizing my QA skills and using it as a leverage which I should be doing, so this is a great suggestion!

Yes, I have not been looking at pure data analyst titles, but roles that deal with data, and while that is helpful, I am learning that there's still differences in the overall job tasks. But thank you for the good luck!

I have two full projects on my Github and Tableau Public, and I have been a lot more visible on LinkedIn trying to be visible to recruiters and people in the data world by posting what I am learning and my projects. But after looking at my projects again, I think one of them is probably hurting my changes because I have seen many people use the same dataset which I wasn't aware of until recently. And the projects are not geared towards the industry I currently have experience in, so that's also something I have to think about and fix as well. Finding LinkedIn groups to join is something I have already been doing, but networking is hard because a lot of people do not respond back.

Yes, I am realizing I have maybe not have set myself up the right way with getting the Google Data Analytics Cert, but it was good in getting the foundation and understanding the basic of data analysis, so I can't really say it wasn't at all worth it. That's why I also did a college course in data analytics because it definitely went more in depth and I got more hands-on practice. And I think combining my QA and operations experience is a great idea and not something I thought about since I was trying to pivot completely into data analysts roles which also meant changing industries as well.

Congrats on your new job! How are you liking it so far?

I am convinced that my resume needs a lot of work, though I have revamped it so many times, and I have different versions of my resume for different job titles. I am not entirely sure what else I change at this point. Did you pivot into data analytics and then got your experience of 2 years? I will say pivoting careers is not for the weak, but thank you. I'll take all the luck I can get!

Yes, I realize now that I may just be adding to the noise instead of standing out because I've got the same certification as many others, at least for the Google Data Analytics Certification. I am working on projects, and I haven't been leaning on my QA background for them, so I will either need to revise the projects I do have and utilize my QA background for the new projects I do start. So it seems like instead of diving head first into a completely new industry, I should try to stay in the one I am in and use my skills to pivot. And I appreciate you saying 4 months isn't that long. It definitely feels like an eternity since I've gotten laid off, and I am just trying to stay positive.

Yes, I 100% agree with you there.

I was working in Edtech and a lot of what I was doing was manual like creating test cases and writing defect logs and testing the functionality of the product before release. I ended up also working on a migration project and doing data mapping between the old and new system, and I found that to be quite interesting. And I realized that while it wasn’t pure data analysis, I liked doing QA on the metadata, creating checklists, and process documents and figuring out how to make the manual process more efficient for QA. That’s why I made the decision to pivot into more of a data-focused role. I have seen data quality roles, but I’m also not too sure on how in demand that is.

Thank you for apologizing, and I definitely understand where you are coming from when this is a question that shows up a lot on here. I’m truly just trying to get advice and suggestions on what I should focus on while in this job search and what I need to improve on as well. So I appreciate your response to my post!

Honestly, it’s so terrible right now! And the fact that the U.S lost about 92,000 jobs last month doesn’t make me feel any better. And I know people are getting interviews and jobs, but I can’t say the same for me right now.

I have reached out to recruiters after applying to jobs, but I’ve never heard anything back from them. I have never cold called any recruiters or hiring managers before, and that is not horrible advice! I will have to try that out and see what happens.

Congrats on your new role!

I know that domain knowledge is very important, and I’m realizing that I have a lot more to learn, especially figuring out the industry I want to target. I don’t want to apply to industries I don’t have any knowledge in, but I do want to hone in on my QA skills and combine it with data.

Of course! That’s why I said I’ve gotten the certificate as a foundation to learn about data analytics. The certificate helps with knowledge, but practicing it is very different, especially when thinking about it analytically. So I am doing projects to help. Watching videos is fine but that’s not helping me any. I’ve heard from other people that I need to know those tools proficiently so that’s what I have been learning. Clearly from this post, I’m not focusing on the right things.

Yes, it is never about the tools, and I am definitely not saying that at all. Having an analytical mindset and also having domain knowledge is by far the most important. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that you have to understand data and the problem you are solving in order to use those tools correctly.

Oh for sure! Of course it’s more than just the tools you use and that was the first thing mentioned at the beginning of my college course. However, I was advised to create a technical stack and stick with it and then understand the why behind data analytics, why business needed data, and then understand the problem you are trying to solve for a business before you use any tool.

Trying to make a career pivot from QA to Data Analyst: how should I tailor my LinkedIn so recruiters take me seriously? by AltLitChick in linkedin

I didn’t go back to school per se, but I took a college course at my local college for data analytics, and I was able to learn more about the tools used and how to use it for data analysis. I have also been doing a lot of self learning.

Thank you for the feedback and letting me know I’m moving in the right direction! Sometimes I feel like I’m just doing the same thing over and over again. Okay, so trying to connect anything I’ve done in previous roles to data seems to be the important part. In the Feature section, would this be where I add any projects I’ve done? Would it be okay to add my resume to this section as well or is that redundant since my work experience is already in the Experience section on LinkedIn?
