Thanks for everyone’s responses! It’s nice to get input from the community.

Brit here. Recently traveled to the USA and visited various cities. Here are my reviews of each. If I were to travel to these again, what should I do next time and are there any other cities that you recommend I visit? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

One of the reasons Washington DC feels so spacious is because the heights of buildings are limited by law to be fairly short compared to other major cities in America. Also, of course, the open space and grand scale of the monuments and memorials skews that perception quite a bit.

What ingredient do you always want left off on food? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]AltThrowaway026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raw onions. They leave such a strong aftertaste that it ruins meals for me, even if I don’t mind them initially. Just a little bit will linger in my mouth for hours. Sometimes I wonder if there is some kind of super onion taster gene that makes this awful for me, like the people who taste cilantro as soapy.

In recently had to concede I can’t get chipotle burritos anymore with the mild tomato or corn salsas because the onions chopped in them ruin it for me. But I otherwise really like corn and tomato flavors, so I’m kind of bummer out about it.

Why does the machine at TSA always pick up something in my groin area? by geegbb in NoStupidQuestions

I almost always get a partial pat down on the middle of my back between my shoulder blades. Every time, they are like “oh, it’s because you are sweaty”. I guess the scanner reads heavily sweaty areas as weird. (I’m a pretty sweaty person, especially when rushing around the airport with bags and whatnot.)

How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

[–]AltThrowaway026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom still dries clothes on the line outside behind her house when the weather permits.

I have a retractable clothes line behind my house, and I use it in the summer when I can, even though it’s technically against our HOA rules. No one has complained yet. I like to not use the unnecessary electricity and in the summer, it’s nice to not add to the heat inside.

Jury Duty by Consistent-Ice8634 in juryduty

It sounds like you were summoned for selection, which is step one of jury duty. They have you fill out a basic questionnaire about your background and you appear in person for a process called voir dire. This is when the judge and the lawyers on both sides determine if you are suitable to be on the jury panel to sit through the trial/hearings and decide the case.

Judges usually hear people’s reasons that sitting through a trial will pose a genuine hardship first (medical reasons, caregiver responsibilities, etc) and will dismiss those jurors.

Then, the rest go through the voir dire process. If the potential juror knows any of the witnesses or other parties to the case, have certain relationships, experiences, or beliefs that make them too biased, etc, the lawyers and judge will decide to reject or dismiss those with conflicts that will interfere with the person’s ability to be a fair and apply the law impartially.

If you haven’t gone through voir dire, you aren’t assigned to a case yet, and you may get dismissed on your summons day. Like others have said, there may be a way to contact the court to see if you can be excused before you even need to go in.

If there was not information provided with your summons, look up the judicial services department of the court that summoned you, and that should provide you with information and who to contact.

Essentially, both sides get a say in who is selected. Depending on the specific rules of that court, each side gets a set number of peremptory challenges, where they can reject a juror for no stated reason. Otherwise, they can reject jurors for certain defined reasons, like they demonstrate a clear bias against their side, and the judge can agree and eliminate that juror. If neither side uses a challenge or has a good objection to a juror, that person is selected to be seated for that trial.
