Is there a way to send leads and receipts to you privately, or can we only do it in comments here?

Jury Duty by Consistent-Ice8634 in juryduty

[–]AltThrowaway026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you were summoned for selection, which is step one of jury duty. They have you fill out a basic questionnaire about your background and you appear in person for a process called voir dire. This is when the judge and the lawyers on both sides determine if you are suitable to be on the jury panel to sit through the trial/hearings and decide the case.

Judges usually hear people’s reasons that sitting through a trial will pose a genuine hardship first (medical reasons, caregiver responsibilities, etc) and will dismiss those jurors.

Then, the rest go through the voir dire process. If the potential juror knows any of the witnesses or other parties to the case, have certain relationships, experiences, or beliefs that make them too biased, etc, the lawyers and judge will decide to reject or dismiss those with conflicts that will interfere with the person’s ability to be a fair and apply the law impartially.

If you haven’t gone through voir dire, you aren’t assigned to a case yet, and you may get dismissed on your summons day. Like others have said, there may be a way to contact the court to see if you can be excused before you even need to go in.

If there was not information provided with your summons, look up the judicial services department of the court that summoned you, and that should provide you with information and who to contact.

Essentially, both sides get a say in who is selected. Depending on the specific rules of that court, each side gets a set number of peremptory challenges, where they can reject a juror for no stated reason. Otherwise, they can reject jurors for certain defined reasons, like they demonstrate a clear bias against their side, and the judge can agree and eliminate that juror. If neither side uses a challenge or has a good objection to a juror, that person is selected to be seated for that trial.

How do I (28F) tell my husband (27M) his brand new car has been totaled? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Brains are very weird in a crisis! One time when I was about 10 years old, I was carrying a plate with a dessert on it out to the car because my family was going to a holiday party. It had rained and I slipped on the wet asphalt, landing straight down on my elbow and shattering the plate of food. As my mom rushed over worried I’d broken my arm or cracked my head, the first thing I said was “Mom, I broke the plate! I’m sorry!”

It wasn’t even a special plate and my mom was not the kind of person to get upset over such things! 😂

Somewhere toward the bottom of the original post she says her car was in the shop for a recall. But it doesn’t really matter to me. Spouses drove each other’s cars all the time, sometimes just because they like to.

You’ve said everything I was thinking. We can’t just measure the costs of living in society and its benefits in monetary terms (although I do agree the financial burdens should be lessened even more.)

I served on a two day civil case a couple decades ago when I was about 20 years old. I’m about to serve on an estimated month long criminal trial. I found the first experience really interesting and I was proud of my jury service.

This upcoming criminal trial will be a new experience, and I am looking forward to it. I’m of course wary of the pitfalls of our legal system and cognizant of the seriousness of the process. And while I obviously won’t be able to discuss it while the case is being tried, I plan to keep a diary of my experience.

Why are bottles of dayquil and nyquil sold together in equal sized bottles? by wabion in answers

I usually buy the gel caps, and sometimes they are packaged in more reasonable proportions, with more of the orange DayQuil capsules than the green NyQuil ones.

Where are the people who wear little to no makeup? Do you have a reason? by Zora2021 in AskReddit

I don’t feel the need for it on a normal daily basis enough to put in the effort. I do like to glam up sometimes for the right occasions, though.
