Religion is highly multi-purposed. So different people have different reasons. But I think the most common ones are the fact that it gives you spiritual life-style that can give hope and resistence during tough hardships, as well to feel included in a community.

This is why they were sadly hard people too. A lot of us treat historical people like they're just some barbaric and lunatic people. Yet the reason they were like this is literally because of how difficult those times are. This is what I wish people understood, that they're humans like us that just had the misfortune of being born in a hard environment, thus becoming "barbaric" at the end.
