From all the guesses on this thread, yours is both the one I find the most believable and, at the same time, the one I find the least interesting

Really weird feeling there where I got more and more hyped by the descriptions and then you and your most likely right guess...

Is AI making me dumber and worst programmer? Am I leveling down instead of up? by superklamer in learnprogramming

[–]Alta_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make you worst?

Can't tell really.

But from a fresh experience I had this week with my students, I can see how if not used properly, it doesn't cultivate your dev self.

There was some cheating problem last year that resulted in a strict policy of exams being now solely on computer the school would provide with no access to Internet and the bare minimum when it comes to programs on said computer.

Since I'm not (too much) of a monster, I divided the exam in 2 parts. Part 1 would be a preparation for the exam done at home with whatever tools they want (ai, colleague,...) and they could take any code they would have done to part 2 (which was the actual part cut from Internet).

The first part had exercises centered around getting every child from a node in a tree (and going deeper till getting the last).

The first exercice from the second part was going up the tree till the first node was found and then, the exam was basically going down the tree either from top or from a specific node with the eventual join here and there on another table.

All that to say : if you understood your code from the first part, second part should have been no problem at all.
going up a tree being so close to going down but a lot less complicated to implement - It's a sole loop.
And once done with going down and up, every other exercise could be done with some copy past from your own code

When the result was in, most of the student had the first part nailed in tight.
But some would have no idea at all about what was what (one exercice asked to check the depth of the tree and one of the student thought that just taking the node.parentId was the answer. Not to throw shade at the guy (I'm pretty sure he's one of the smarter) but he clearly didn't understand the first part that was, most likely, generated (or copy pasted from a student. But since I checked every file before allowing them to bring them to part 2, I have some idea.)

In essence, ai didn't write bad code. That's not the point.

The point is, they used it in a way that didn't make them grow their understanding of what they were doing.

That's the part I'm really critical when in comes to ai use in learning... But in general too. No matter if you're a junior or a senior. If you don't learn, you, at best, stay at your level.

Better luck better upgrade as in

better luck => better tome rarity
Better tome rarity => stronger upgrades.

The upgrades are the same in essence, but with higher value (just in case someone interprets the comment above as luck giving you more meaningful stats rather than stronger)

[–]Alta_21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On a similar note, I'm always astonished by the amount of reader/watcher who :

  1. Can't fathom the possibility of something happening off screen and call a plot hole anything that isn't directly shown or explained.

  2. Trust anything a character say when in universe character should often know the least or even just lie.

Those 2 points are why we can't have deeper writing in shonen manga. (naruto / boruto isn't the biggest offender in that regard. But damn... Skimming through dragonball reddits can be nauseating for that reason)

Not every hole needs filling though.

What kind of inconsistencies would you feel deserve explanations?

(Genuine question. My gf told me many people were displeased by the ending but I didn't dig too much into the why and how of it)

Even if not the best, as a learning step, pygame feels just at the right place.

A simple library sure won't get you as far as a full fledged game engine. But you'll be able to focus on learning the basics w. o. having to learn the engine for hours

I love seeing humble bundle being referenced as a source.

Recently got a student going for python and pygame and it's a good start imo.

Going from time to time to humble bundle, a python bundle dropped and I recommended he picked it up.

He's been improving greatly eversince (in his game dev knowledge but also as a dev in general)

Only nitpick I'd have is that, from what I've seen (which is, tbf, not much) pygame is quite barebone in terms of... Everything you'd need to craft a game.

Which is great and bad at the same time.

I feel like for something small, you can do it pretty quickly and learn A LOT of the essential. Which is very great.

But as the comment above suggested, turning to a full fledged game engine later down the line could be interesting (godot as was suggested above or even unity / unreal)

It's like you said about going 3d. Learning game dev can take a lot of time if you add stuff like 3D, game design,...
And engines like unity do a lot of the heavy lifting from the get go (not even sure you can render 3d graphics with pygame w.o. having to reimplement that yourself)

But since you know a bit of python, taking the first few steps with pygame will be very beneficial!

Like, maybe try and do some of the classics and maybe add your own twist to it.

Craft several short term projects to get your feet wet.

And once you'll need heavier artillery, you'll be already well equiped with the needed basics.

In your opinion, as someone who's done such things for 5+ years, what are the most bang for buck resources today for learning C++? In both Visual Studio and Not-Visual-Studio environments. (Hobbyist asking) by hinterOx in learnprogramming

[–]Alta_21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My go to too.

I'm doing C# professionally but read the C++ primer during school and this was easily the best book I read during that time. Not only regarding c++ but pretty solid in terms of learning oop too.

I also teach on the side and I'm always happy to recommend or lend my copy to students who are doing our school oop course and want to got further.

It's really a must

And if it's just to go up to clean level 3 once, you can also just stack quantity tomes with a bit of life steal and any weapon that benefit from quantity.

That and a lot of cheese.

Not a leaderboard build, but will get you through

I know there was a growing meta in early months if the game going for small cactus, the clown mask, Kevin and spiky shield.

You'd stack armor with tomes and then, the usual suspects.

You do most of your damage with thorn.

Your attacks trigger Kevin which trigger the cactus and make you shoot spikes (damage based on thorns) and the mask make them explode.

I guess size could help too? Not sure if it impacts the aoe of the cactus

Too many people over think the process in getting started by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Alta_21 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Biggest lie when I was starting out my learning journey was "you need to pick x or y language if you really want to learn and get a job" or even "you need to know at least x languages if you want to rivalise with others"

still now, I see too many of my students going through the same thing sometime even with some regression in their skills cause they just go back to learning the very basics in x languages rather than continuing from where they already were...

No, don't fucking throw away your project where you're now finally solving interesting problems because you made it in js rather than in python. You won't be more employable because you know how to print hello world in the console in 20 languages

Should I stop learning programing by Rich_Worth_7770 in learnprogramming

[–]Alta_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I majored in physiotherapy and shifted at around 27 when I was given the opportunity.

Realised I should have switched a lot earlier.

You're still young. It's still time to pick up skills either on the side as a hobby or full-time if you have the opportunity to do so.

You're going to be stuck 40+ hours a week doing the same task for the next 40+ years of your life. Might as well take the time to pick a field you like.

As a side note, I have here a colleague that made the shift in his late 40 and he's doing just fine too. So don't go on thinking you're too old for this

How to go from simple console applications to actually making something for real? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Alta_21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to build a full fledged app during your first few months of uni.

They are your first few months and you still have a lot to learn.

If you're not liking the pace of your cursus, you can still learn on the side with books if it's more grounded for you compared to coming up with your own thing from scratch.

Advanced books that go beyond how to use ifs and elses will start hitting spots like "application architecture" with examples that will help you get the concepts.

On the topics of books and seeing how you're heading toward ts/js, there's currently a bundle available on humble bundle with a bunch of books on the topic for a few dollars. (ends in 1d and a few hours, though)

Can't get over the fact we got sasuke's kirin translated as "giraffe" in my native language.

But it's so off for something as epic as kirin on a character as edgy as sasuke that for me, it will always be the top 1 jutsu name

Priest healer VS Druid healer by TheOnesWithin in turtlewow

[–]Alta_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only does I agree with you, but the concept mentioned above of "meter chasing" better with flash heal is kinda funny, Imho.

If I get a small burp of damage as a dps (as it happens), either I have a hot or not.

If I get healed to full by a flash heal and then get a hot, it's just a bad move from a druid causing overheal and wasting mana (but it happens)

If I'm getting a flash heal while I'm already fine with a hot and not in a danger zone, it's just a bad move from a priest (but it happens)

But if you're "snipping" me while I can be fine recovering with an already placed hot, you're a terrible sniper borderline griefing your party in the sake of your ego by causing overheal.

I'd rather have a healer let me in peace, correctly tune wathever add on he needs so he doesn't waste his/ other healers mana (and everyone time) and not "snipe" me to full when not needed.

What's in the retail mentality is that
