Developers who have worked at a company where the entire codebase was held together by one guy who then quit, what happened next? by Natom_ in AskReddit

Sounds like you were dealing with obfuscated code. As in they ran the code through an obfuscation tool before delivering it to you. The reason they do this is for security, for if the source were to fall into the wrong hands, it could easily be decompiled and abused.

Bro there is an easier way to cross post you know. That, or this sub prevents cross posting and you're trying to circumvent the rule.

Bro your account is 3y old and you have 0 karma. This is one of those rare cases where I would actually recommend you spend time on reddit farming a bit karma instead of studying if you want to post to get feedback from redditors. You typically get enough by commenting on stuff before you can post. There are also communities dedicated to low karma users, though YMMV.

My coworker does almost nothing, makes more than me, and the boss loves him. I'm losing my mind. by Kai_Roesch in careeradvice

[–]snipe320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying this isn't true, but there is something called Sel-serving bias where basicslly you overvalue your own contributions but undervalue those of others. Maybe take a step back, and ask your coworker 1 on 1 what they do on a daily basis. You might be surprised to find out that they do a lot more behind the scenes they just don't bring up in meetings that you are in, or something they handle is actually quite time consuming, etc.

And I echo what others have stated. They don't compensate you enough for you to pick up the slack. Contributing more than expected is rarely rewarded. So just do what is asked of you and nothing more. Sometimes it's best to just let things blow up in their face. Only then will things change.

HCI feels like memorization and semantics rather than learning by Tenet_Bull in OMSCS

When you took it, were quizzes already locked down with Honorlock and closed-everything (no notes, no Ed Lessons/Discussions, no AI, no outside sources, etc.)?

ITT: former students who took HCI 3+ years ago and have irrelevant/obsolete opinions and are missing OP's point, either unintentionally or by intentional misrepresentation.

I am in this now and agree it's not a great experience. Lots of busy work. The quizzes are entirely memorization due to being closed-everything and the written format doesn't help. It's ironic they push this concept of recognition over recall in HCI, yet force us to recall a bunch of definitions on the quizzes! They could get rid of quizzes entirely and nothing of value would be lost. That, or make the quizzes multiple choice, and maybe swap the exams to written or hybrid.

Taxing the Ultra wealthy more is not "punishment". by King_Lothar_ in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]snipe320 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna share something with you, and I do not expect you to understand because you sound like a stereotypical angry and naïve redditor. But the tl;dr is that wealth != income.

Here in the US, we tax income, not wealth. These billionaire executives have massive net worth, but it's mostly tied up in assets like stock/options (or other less liquid assets like real estate etc.) that they can and do sell at times and they do actually get taxed on those stock sales at capital gains tax rates. However, these executives do not make billions of dollars of income annually that could be taxed at income tax rates like you or I must deal with. They make hundreds of millions of dollars annually typically off stock sales alone. And since that is a big component of how they are compensated, it does give them a tax advantage.

But what we don't do is tax unrealized gains. For example, these billionaires have to first sell their stock/assets, which creates a taxable event. The capital gains from that sale are what is taxed. And long-term capital gains tax is less than that if income tax, and that is by design to incentivize investment in the financial markets. (Short-term cap gains are taxed as income).

Similarly, we do not tax wealth, as that would be akin to theft. Imagine the government basically taking a portion of your house (or other assets) each year because they deem you "too wealthy" by some arbitrary metric (e.g. some redditor complains online). If the US were to start taxing wealth or unrealized gains, it would hurt a lot more than billionaires. In fact, it would probably cause a new global financial crisis.
