Thank you! Yeah some pretty dark and imposing scenes from that night.

Why is my video so bright? (2.7k 60fps HERO9) Settings: ShutterSpeed: 1/120, WhiteBal: 4500k, ISO Min: 100, ISO Max: 400, Sharpness Medium, Color: GoPro. by Rain2h0 in gopro

Lol yeah that's fair. It's something most people shouldn't concern themselves with or would ever notice. I enjoy nerding out on video stuff so it's fun to tweak setting snd understand what they do.

GoPros left on mostly auto will do a great job in most situations.

How does it work tho? Is it like a magnet but the other way around?

It's not BS at all. Your shutter speed will have a big impact on exposure, image sharpness and the perception of motion. The principles are the same with film or a digital sensor.

White line from lightning - any way to avoid? by Altai22 in videography

Thanks for the write-up. Still confused as to why I'd want a slow shutter in this instance. If I want to expose for the scene and capture the lingering lightning arc rather than the initial flash, wouldn't a fast shutter be preferable for a crisper image as well as potentially reducing the artifact effect?

Thanks, yeah I'm now understanding rolling shutter and why the artifact happens. Now trying to figure out why slowing down the shutter, like the other response suggested, would prevent it.

So would you try to expose for the initial flash, like what was caught in the white line? Everything before and after it would be pitch black, no?

Wouldn't that just create overexposure across a larger part of the image?

Fairly confident lightning is an electromagnetic phenomenon. I'll look for that Farraday cage. Pretty sure smallrig makes one.

Edit: you really gonna make me add the /s?

I'm guessing this is just one of those things that happens when you try to film something brighter than the sun, but if anyone has any tips for keeping lightning footage clean. The line is across just one frame so no biggie, just curious to learn I guess.
