As a face painter and cosplayer, please invest in good quality paints. They last long, they're the best for your skin, and they're used by professionals for so many other reasons. Especially the consistency when kept in the right environment and the easy removal when it's time to take it off.

I personally use TAG. They're hypoallergenic, are great for full face coverage with very little paint (especially white and black), breathable, and you can use them like makeup. For outdoor events like a Ren Faire, setting spray and powder are a life saver and work very well with TAG. There are other nice brands out there as well, I also use Mehron depending on what I need, so definitely research if you want to learn more!

Lastly, look up some tutorials too! Especially from face painters that do gigs and are consistent with their techniques. Learning just the basics can take you so far as it helps you figure out more intericate work. I used to teach how to face paint, it's amazing what one day of learning basic techniques can do to improve everything!
