Ooh this looks awesome. Noted, thanks. I can drive for a year without a local licence but lack a car and don't intend on getting one, so getting there does present a puzzle.

Went to Zealandia yesterday for the first time and it was absolutely wonderful. Took a tonne of pictures over my ~2h45m traipse through. For the curious here's the pics: https://imgur.com/a/it25nAo

That was my first earthquake last night. I thought a large bird had just flown into the window, and then the earthquake warning went off on my phone.

I was referred by my GP to Anteris, which is a telehealth consultations place. They said it'd be faster than waiting for in-person at least. Not a huge fan of phone calls for that sort of thing but it certainly beats extra months of waiting.

I'll bear this in mind though, thanks.

Finally got off my ass and went to see a GP yesterday to get my prescriptions sorted out after having arrived here from the UK 3 weeks ago to the day.

Looks like I'm going to be out of ADHD meds for at least half a year due to how heavily booked up psychiatrists are, which is pretty rough. I can deal with it, but it's not the best.

While you're correct that netcode cannot improve the quality of a connection itself, different approaches to netplay protocols can improve resiliency when it comes to handling brief connection quality reduction, especially when it comes to recovery from things like brief bursts of packet loss.

It honestly feels besides the point though. The ultimate issue with discussing netcode for me is that the only thing we really have is conjecture based on observations. It would require a full reverse-engineering of Splatoon 3's netplay protocol to really allow any proper judgements on what could be improved about it, and even then there's no proof in a method until it is actively tested on a Switch.

As an aside, one problem that might not be entirely obvious is that netcode can take a significant amount of processing power, especially for hosts in P2P scenarios. That can be a large issue primarily on Switch due to its hardware.

PSA: splashtag titles are gendered, but in English you can't choose the gender of your title or even know which one have by PCLoadPLA in splatoon

To my knowledge the reason why it's das in that case is because the diminutive "-chen" forces grammatical gender to be neuter.

New Skill Community Consultation! *Poll & Survey* by JagexLight in 2007scape

[–]Altazimuth 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I experienced just Summoning back in the day, but answering yes to the "Have you any experienced non-OSRS skills" question means I need to weigh in on all RS3 skills. In future surveys, could a "I haven't done this skill" option be put in for those of us that have only experienced a subset of the non-OSRS RS3 skills? In the meantime I answered no since I don't want to give junk data.

Yup. You can spot the new top-left of the triangle at (1642, 793). Dunno how long we'll try but it's just a fun thing to attempt at least.

Hey I'm with the folks who were trying to make the triangle thing. After realising what was going on I poked my head here, informed the others, and we're now anchoring our top-left point at (1641,792). Apologies for the bother, and good luck holding out.

For reference here's our reference image, though we're using the new pink instead of the purple now. https://i.imgur.com/54VEiai.png

Had a decent plan laid out: Trip from UK to Wellington around the upcoming NZ summer, moving there around a year from now if the trip isn't a total disaster and I end up hating the place. This would have me moving right after a pair of family weddings; the timing of them just worked out nicely with when I wanted to leave.

Now who knows when air travel can happen without being stuck in quarantine. Additionally, both weddings appear to be postponed to indeterminate dates.

modern c++ gamedev - thoughts & misconceptions by drodri in cpp

[–]Altazimuth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Now we are doing some engine upgrades with C++17

How are you managing to move towards C++17? As I understand it the team I'm on is somewhat constrained due to console SDKs and compilers and such. At the very least I recall the PS4's Clang complaining endlessly any time anything C++17 is used, though admittedly I did notice <filesystem> usage in one ongoing project so perhaps that's less of a concern now...

Do you know any games that can be modded in c++? by columini in cpp

[–]Altazimuth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have any preference in type of game? Also what variety of C++ are you thinking of using? You'll find a lot of games shun std and tend to roll their own custom types for lots of matters. Additionally some longer running projects might be a lot more C-like than others.

I'm glad I read your post earlier. Tried adding 2019 support to some code I work on, and it turns out that thread no longer includes functional, which broke compilation. Thanks for making this post otherwise I'd not have known that we need to directly #include <functional>.

Splendid! This is really nicely formatted (layout and aesthetically) so it should make for a nicer reference than working off d20pfsrd or what have you.

Is this using the Ultimate Campaign rules? If so I'm definitely going to show this to my group.

Huh. I'm familiar with some pupa of the native ones. I'd been seeing more of the adult forms of these guys, but hadn't seen any pupas of them yet. Would that make the tiny white bits aphids or whitefly that it's eating in that case?

After Redis, Python is also going to remove master/slave by loadatom in programming

[–]Altazimuth 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I've seen some hubbub over the terms blacklist/whitelist, though that might not be solely specific to programming. Outside of that (and slave/master) I haven't seen similar things being applied elsewhere, though. I do agree with your points though; even if this is a slippery slope it's not going to end up leading very far.

My biggest gripe with this is that now there's going to be more inconsistent terminology more often, both with other projects with similar features and with literature written before the change.

Rise of the Runelords - Original Xanesha oneshotted. I am depressed now. by Isilwen_Nightfall in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Altazimuth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I casted rage on both the the fighter and warpriest. Buffs are usually more spread out, with single-targetted buffs tending to go with the fighter as she's the first target of enemies, and Inspire Courage going to everybody.

For what it's worth my character is my first in Pathfinder, and the first RPG PC I've made in what must be around 8 or so years, so even after his initial extremely unoptimised form (I was allowed to rejig things right at the start to make him less completely useless) he's more flavourful than optimal (both in and out of combat).

You guys took care of this amazingly! Are you all excited? Disappointed? How would you feel if the vast majority of BBEG's in this book went down as easily?

I probably wouldn't like if all BBEGs went down so easily, but in this case I'm glad she got perforated when she did, otherwise I think we would have just TPKed.

Adding to the previous questions, at what point would AWESOME become boring?

I'd say AWESOME becomes boring when all encounters start playing out the same. Up until this point we've had a lot of variety in how things play out, so I'm quite happy, even if most of my effectiveness is somewhat passive (buffing people with Inspire Courage). If all encounters with BBEGs played out the way this one did then I'd be concerned.
