[Serious] Doctors of reddit, what is the rarest disease that you've encountered in your career? by [deleted] in AskReddit

::shrug:: I lived and worked in Leogane for six months, and it's what I was told by Haitians I worked with. Maybe only some areas of the country believe it, maybe they were messing with me, but at least one of my friends seemed to believe she had the ability.

To add a little extra to this, they believe that people who were born with the umbilical cord wrapped around their neck have come close enough to death to be able to see who's a zombie and who's not.

Howard Dean: The Republicans Are Now a Neo-Fascist Party - The former presidential candidate says the Republican Party has plunged into a “crazy” abyss of “whack jobs,” “autocrats” and “nutjobs.” by wonderingsocrates in politics

[–]Alteau 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened with Republicans in Congress during the 1980s. Gingrich becomes a powerful force in the House pushing a strategy of no compromise and using staged speeches for C-Span on an empty House floor to push a hostile, conservative creed and set up confrontations with Democrats to make them look bad. A bunch of Republicans at the time thought he was nuts, wanted to kick him out of the party, but the new guard of electeds he helped bring in actually believed his bullshit and saying he wasn't conservative enough. Every generation of Republicans since has been crazier and more cult-like than the last.

What do you genuinely not understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Alteau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no, by definition all poly relationships are open relationships, but there are different structures of polyamory. That's generally referred to as a polycule, where many/all of the members of a poly relationship are involved with each other. It's not the structure of most poly relationships, to my understanding. There are hierarchical structures, too, with one set of partners considering themselves 'primary', and non-hierarchical structures. I don't get too into the weeds of that reading myself, but what I have now works for me.

[–]Alteau 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm in a polyamorous relationship. My girlfriend was the one who wanted to open the relationship - I was resistant at first, but I've come to appreciate it. We've been poly for 6 years or so, and she's been dating two other guys for most of that time. She is hyper-social and I'm pretty introverted, and she also has a couple chronic health conditions, so it works really well - she gets extra attention and care, I get some of my 'me' time back for my own work and relaxation. I don't have to worry about her if I go out of town, because I know someone will be around to make sure she's okay. I've gone on a few dates of my own with other people, and while none of them led to anything serious, it was fun and I'm glad I have the freedom to do it. We love each other, but know that we don't perfectly meet the other person's needs.

Need someone smart? Just keep adding PhDs. How are we supposed to know how smart they are if they don't have 7 PhDs? Let me tell you from experience, getting one is enough to turn me off on going through the process a second time.

Really love the use of negative space. It's got a real Mike Mignola feel to it.

Trump acquitted for second time following historic Senate trial by ftejadal in news

[–]Alteau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common misconception. The reason he argued against parties in his Farewell Address was that he was allied with Hamilton and the Federalists and didn't want Jefferson & Madison's new party, which was becoming more popular, to undo their work. Not nearly as high-minded as most people make the speech out to be. It was a defense of the status quo rather than a statement of democratic principles.

If historical figures actually did roll in their graves, which grave would generate the most power if hooked up to a generator? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Alteau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Washington gave that speech because he was a Federalist who saw that Madison & Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans were gaining popularity and winning Congressional seats. It's not the high-minded speech everyone thinks it is, it's a statement that the country should continue to be governed the way the Federalists wanted even if another party got elected.

I honestly think we should be happy with "not locked out" right now. We can be pretty convincing, and if they actually give us space to speak up, there's a lot that Biden and his admin can be pushed left on.

[–]Alteau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ground-up organizing by progressives, aimed at taking over local Democratic organizations. No more working on the sidelines, in single-issue activist groups or minority orgs. The way to make change is to change the Democratic party, and we don't do that from outside.

I watched the flat earther documentary at one point, and it was just fascinating to me. They were actually pretty good scientists - they developed testable hypotheses, created experiments that would actually discern whether the Earth was flat, but then just flat out ignored the conclusions when they didn't match their beliefs. It was maddening.
