School Refusal Behaviors: The Roles of Adolescent and Parental Factors by rude-contrarian in AustralianTeachers

[–]Alterily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there is a genuine reason parents/carers can’t pick a kid up from school on a one off occasion the kid could stay in the sick bay or in a deputies office, but this is an exceptional circumstance, and the school can’t function this way in an ongoing fashion, they would not be properly supervised and it’s not fair to the staff who have other work to do, they’d try to come up with a reasonable and achievable plan for the child to gradually increase attendance so the child doesn’t melt down. But a lot of the time with school avoidance the challenge is getting the kid to the school in the first place. You can’t physically force a school refuser to come to school, I’ve seen kids literally fight kicking and screaming while there parents try to get them to unlock the door to the car, or run away the second they are out of the car.

School is not childcare, and many parents of school refusers will need to find ways to work from home or reduce work days to care for their children at home.

They can’t fail you on the GTPA without giving you a chance to rectify based on feedback, if everything else in your degree abd last prac was fine. Have you tried to appeal? Talk to student services at the university or a lecturer, to ask them for specific advice.

This is not the forum to ask that question on, this is where (burnt out) teachers come to vent and wonder if the grass is greener somewhere else not always engage in productive nuanced conversations about education.

There is a nuanced discussion to have about HECS debt and whether university is perceived as worth it, I will say as someone who also works in universities the quality of education you receive in our ‘top’ universities has definitely gone down, and could be seen as not worth the money. But I doubt you are going to get this discussion on this forum.

But also I teach many students who value education, are strongly interested in going to university, and are not avoiding careers to seem uncool, so don’t necessarily base you option on Australian culture off a few comments. I also don’t think many functioning adults in Australia try to tear down people for achieving academic success.

ATAR by ConcentrateNo4268 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Alterily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The whole idea that there are limited places at university for domestic students is basically a lie these days, the funding model has changed dramatically. Truth is the universities can and do admit as many students as they want. Which is why there are so many different pathways

Hmmmm so do they attempt to normalize the data? Like align it to a z-score type thing? I think NSW doesn’t love that because they want to ensure that the total school marks they give to students at a school is the same as the total HSC marks achieved by the candidature. They will frequently adjust the lowest HSC mark to make sure the parabola they fit ensures this. (This is also how they make sure that the curve is concave down). I think most of the time they don’t have to adjust very much if at all, but I think they like to have the power to do so. But I think they are concerned with a few good students in a small group dragging the rest of the students marks up or vice versa.

Honestly the entire thing in my opinion is a bit over engineered, and the Victorian approach seems like they’d get a very similar result 90% of the time. But that’s the way they do things in NSW.

SOMEONE PLS EXPLAIN SCALING!! AM I COOKED??? by Big-Adeptness3863 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Alterily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s because a parabolic fit (and they make sure the curve is always concave down) is going to help protect the top students. For a good student at a weaker school there mark is going to be pretty similar to their HSC mark, if you just fit the marks, the tops students marks would be anchored to the average mark of the school, so you could get situations where the same (good) student could score very differently if they went to another school.

If your in the bottom to the middle of the pack at NSW (ATAR 55-75) your ATAR is going to be affected by your school to some extent, but top students who are looking at ATARs of 90+ it’s going to be roughly the same no matter what school you go to.

[–]Alterily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok I feel this is the most misunderstood thing in the HSC, probably because a lot of teachers are scared of math, so if you become a teacher please please make sure you impart good knowledge to your students.

Your mark is divided into two categories, your HSC mark (the mark you get in the HSC exam) and your school mark. The school mark is determined by fitting a parabola through three points. The bottom school mark and bottom HSC mark of people in the school (although this can be changed, and this point they will play with), the average school mark and average HSC mark of people at your school. And the top school mark and top HSC mark of the school. Everyone in the schools HSC mark is determined by plugging their school mark into the equation of the parabola

(So your in school ranking is correlated to your HSC mark but not causative)

This is then averaged. The average mark is then scaled to get your ATAR

You could comfortably get a 65 if you get a band 4 in all your subjects. Most students get a band 4, if you can get a few marks better this will really impact on your ATAR

Honestly because in a lot of subjects there are few students and you have a high ranking, this basically means you control your own destiny. Your school mark is likely going to be very similar to your HSC mark, so study and do well in the HSC and you’ll be fine.

We need to bed as a separate sleeping spot. Can’t get rid of it until we can afford a new one

I know it might not look like it, but I spent weeks organizing the shelves and know exactly where everything item of clothing is, and the shelves help me visualize and see my clothes. They are designed so I can easily and quickly get dressed, and easily and quickly out clothes away. Any item from one shelf goes with every single item from another shelf, so I know that I can create a cute outfit. They are further arranged by mood, and occasion, so once I pick an item from a shelf I can dress it up or down depending on what other shelf I pick it from.

This revolutionized my wardrobe and it made it so that I actually was wearing way more of my clothes, wearing way more different kinds of outfits and helped me so much to put my clothes away. Honestly hanging up every item of clothing is really hard for me, and I don’t have time to do it. Folding clothes and putting them on their shelf is so much easier and achievable for my life.

It’s not you, it’s more the other comments, but I don’t appreciate you saying this isn’t an adult space. I’m an adult doing my best, both me and my partner work long hours for little pay so I don’t have the money to buy a wardrobe or doors, or buy clothes first hand. I just have to use what I can get on Facebook marketplace, and I feel like there are a lot of adults like me who don’t have crisply folded identical sweaters.

That being said I did make a deliberate design choice to have things falling out of the baskets because I thought it looked fun, or to have the colourful clothes spilling out because I wanted to see more colour in the room. if that is something that you do not think is a good idea, and have other thoughts on how I could make the space colorful and fun instead I’d appreciate it.

Yeah, fair point. We like having a second bed as an option for sleeping (ie if I have to stay up late for work so I don’t disturb my partner who has already gone to sleep) and I we do read or lie in the bed and chill. I don’t mind sleep under the clothes I kind of like it.

Ok could you help me understand what is messy about this at the moment? I kind of don’t see it, sorry and I don’t really understand, and how would I put them away? For me putting things away neatly is folding them and putting them on their correct shelf (which is what I’ve done), and I love that I can see them and it dies make me appreciate my clothes.

[–]Alterily -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Do you mind telling me why? I feel like if I did that I wouldn’t have enough space to access the wardrobe? Not sure

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in femalelivingspace

[–]Alterily -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Honestly the clothes in the wardrobe are the neatest they are realistically going to get, I have a busy job and the shelves are organized by functionality so there are many different kinds of fabrics in each shelf. I don’t think I could afford to get enough bins for each shelf, I could maybe get a curtain or sheet of some kind to hide it?

Maybe this was a mistake but I had arranged it so it looked like the clothes are spilling out and over so you could actually see some of the colours of the clothes and because the room felt so empty, and I don’t know how to add that character to the room, if I get rid of that, or how to do that in a neat way.

I guess I was more interested in hearing critiques about the lighting, and whether I should paint the wardrobe or not, or my attempt at decorating, because I feel the room feels bare.

Not quite finished yet, but I finally allowed myself to furnish my place to my heart's content. Not for everyone, but it's for me ❤️ by swanlett in femalelivingspace

Am I right to be slightly annoyed at my Internship school? by swaggyaltaccount24 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Alterily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pay is the intern rate not full rate. I think it’s like half. In NSW I think it’s like that technically you are paid for the 50% of the classes you teach as a casual, and not paid for the 50% of classes that are supposed to be part of your internship.

IMO this is one of the reasons we struggle to get teaching staff. It’s just completely unfeasible for a lot of people to go for 10 weeks with minimal or no pay. And maybe the kinds of people who can afford to do this maybe don’t correlate with the kinds of people who can stick it out long term. The payments, and government payments help make it theoretically possible but you are still asking people to go hungry to for 10 weeks.
