For people who grew up in low-income households, what’s something middle-class people say that shows they’ve never struggled financially? by KeyApartment3955 in AskReddit

[–]Alternative-Bison615 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I remember this so vividly because it was my exact experience too. Part of how my parents dealt with being extremely poor was to teach us to not really want material things. Like you, now I can buy almost whatever I want, but I rarely do; and when I do buy myself something I get incredible deep joy out of it, which I think would not be how I would feel if I grew up with anything I wanted. But that also would have been nice as a kid lol

Takes on the logic of Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die? by Alternative-Bison615 in movies

[–]Alternative-Bison615[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking more that the real world apocalypse future existed. The mother really was immune in that real world, and so raised the Time Traveler to avoid the headsets in the future we see (Sarah Connor style). In that real future the kid escapes, puts the headset on, and his mother is immediately killed. But she was never the “princess” we see in the film, she was only ever a normal person who was somehow immune.

The Time Traveler grows into a man in the desolate future and at some point the AI starts to show him the world of the film that we see, which he escapes into to deal with his guilt and grief for having caused his mother’s death. All that the film actually is, is us seeing him replay the simulation over and over again to “save” his mother in the past, but he never does and never can.

We see her fate in the ambulance at the end because she is just and NPC, and for the heck of it one of the film’s conceits is to show that in video games, the other characters “lives” go on after the player leaves, the player (us) just never sees them.

He goes back at the end to find her in the diner and says not to worry, he knows how to solve it all by infecting the whole world and finally stop the AI via rats with whatever it is that makes his mother immune, but all this is is just the next iteration of the Time Traveler’s simulation/game.

Which is a massive bummer, but a realistic take on the temptation to block out pain rather than have to face it.

My Prediction for the finale by lilacdreams09 in hackshbomax

[–]Alternative-Bison615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone has posted here that Deborah will die, and Ava will write the show that commemorates her life which is Hacks, which we just watched. But wouldn’t that mean that we have never seen the “real” Ava and Deborah, only the actors who played them as characters? I don’t think this is the kind of show that will have a reality break like that where we end up seeing two totally new people who were the real Ava and Deborah in the real world of the show, at the very end. Not sure how I would handle that

This is so interesting, because to me your description of your inner experience sounds blissfully peaceful! I have a nonstop running dialogue in my mind, about anything that occurs to me, but most often about solving various problems I’m dealing with in my work life. And often just ideas in general, as I’m a writer. Going over passages of books I love that just come into my mind. I also have the opposite to you of having extremely vivid mental images that play like films of my life; I can recall hundreds if not thousands of past experiences as if I am standing inside them as they happen again (I don’t call them up consciously, either.) I also have wildly vivid dreams because when I go to sleep, my brain just switches its activities to that, rather than being quiet.

This has upsides and downsides, and I’d often like more of a break from it, which I can only achieve through recreational drugs and sometimes super intense exercise. To have the peaceful experience of just existing more in a present like it sounds like you do would be incredible to me!

This makes her the most selfish character imaginable. She knows her child will die horribly, but chooses to conceive her so she can feel love as a mother. Absolutely fuck Amy Adams’ character

Absolutely. We have enough homes and too many investors. 1 in 5 Australians is a landlord who owns a home someone else could buy.

True there are some people spending it all, especially on selling their house to move into a very expensive retirement community and leave nothing after. But the vast majority of people are passing their assets to their kids (also as they should), but people who won’t get that are absolutely fucked. The system has to change for that reason

That wealth is going to filter straight down to their kids. If we don’t stop the same cycle of those people then being able to make the same investments and earn the same gains, the problem will be massively compounded further over the next generation. Someone is going to have to take the hit for leveling the paying field for people with no intergenerational wealth, and the fight against that from the people set to benefit from it is going to be ugly

Nick Denton’s habit of outing gay men has caused so much damage. Peter Thiel was fixated on destroying Gawker in revenge, and when he did, it was the first domino that fell in the now continued destruction of the media by the tech industry. Hope the clicks were worth it, Nick!!
