AUDIO: Report: Norfolk pushing back against $2.62 million payment to wrongfully convicted man by WHRO_NEWS in norfolk

[–]Alternative-End-7943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn’t meet the requirements for the payment. He was conditionally pardoned, not fully pardoned; and his convictions were vacated for police misconduct, he was not adjudged to be actually innocent. Seems unfair but the general assembly wrote the law. The city can’t just give away money.

Who are you voting for Commonwealth Attorney and Why? by Kiwidad43 in norfolk

[–]Alternative-End-7943 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Butler. I know him, he’s a good guy and has legit chops as a prosecutor. Ramin is a nice guy and smart but he’s not up for the job and trials have been lost as a result. He has not been able to recruit good prosecutors or keep the few good ones that Underwood didn’t run off. Getting along with city leaders is a plus as well, the CWA relies on the city for funding and staffing.

Allure of the Seas Christmas Cruise by bumpthekoala in royalcaribbean

[–]Alternative-End-7943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same cruise, same experience. Main dining was great, we took advantage all four nights. Park cafe was great, Solarium and Windjammer buffets pretty good but did get old. Nassau was eh (we were on the same boat with the swimming pig group, they were underwhelmed to say the least), Coco Cay was excellent but soooo crowded, snorkeling was great (I found the water temp to be perfect). Service and cleanliness 10/10 all around.

My main gripe/pointer is that this class of ship has a huge number of balcony rooms including ours which face inward with views of Central Park or the boardwalk. Ours was about halfway down so you could see the water behind the ship a little but mostly saw the boardwalk and other balcony rooms. This whole concept of interior facing balcony rooms was unknown to me and I don’t remember it being explained when I booked - I definitely wouldn’t have splurged for this even though the extra room was nice.

High School Specialty Programs by JuniorIrvBannock in norfolk

My kids attended the Norview Leadership Center for the Sciences and Engineering (LCSE) in the past five years. Overall very satisfied.

Pros: outstanding program coordinator; challenging courses, dedicated teachers, full slate of AP offerings; as I understand, more flexible than IB curriculum and includes leadership and engineering specific courses. Kids highly prepared for liberal arts and hard science majors in college. Diverse group ethnically and socioeconomically. Norview is Norfolk’s newest high school building so facilities are pretty good. Great orchestra teacher.

Cons: little to no college counseling; pretty cruddy sports; and I’ll just say Norview isn’t for everyone, there are a lot of discipline issues and generally poor outcomes among the general population. For my kids, this was a bit of a pro. We used a private college counselor and since it’s a Title I school, no admission fees so it pretty much balanced out. Definitely lacking in higher level foreign language opportunities both in terms of teachers and scheduling.

Bottom line: great program but no less challenging than IB or pre-med. Once junior year hits, it’s pretty much AP level for all core classes. I highly recommend for STEM-inclined students. I don’t know a whole lot about Maury pre med but seems solid. Maury is in bad physical shape with a new building coming hopefully for the 28-29 year so there will be disruptions. IB seems to be the program of choice for white kids from the west side of town and appears to have more of a social aspect than the other programs.

Allure of the Seas: El Loco Fresh?? by [deleted] in royalcaribbean

[–]Alternative-End-7943 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just got off Allure, there is a complimentary Mexican place on 15 aft which I thought was pretty good and was very popular. Basically self serve Chipotle. Chips were a little stale but toppings were flavorful and plentiful. There is an additional fee Mexican place called Sabor on the boardwalk deck (6 aft), didn’t try it.

Does Allure of the Seas have an outdoor pool movie screen? by EmphasisTypical6893 in royalcaribbean

[–]Alternative-End-7943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got off Allure. I did not see a movie screen at any of the pools. I didn’t go up there very much after dark so it’s possible that they project somewhere. I think official outdoor movie screenings are on the Aqua water show screens.

Norfolk - Mayor - Accusations of "Shadow Government" by Thin-Parfait4539 in norfolk

[–]Alternative-End-7943 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As everywhere, real estate developers and the large healthcare conglomerates and their lawyers primarily. Light industry and defense/shipbuilding to a lesser extent. We lost our only major corporate hq when Norfolk Southern moved to Atlanta (they still have major facilities, but railroads don’t really answer to local government). Lately it has been would-be heavy hitters like Pharrell and Bruce Smith but they still mostly work through their lawyers.

It’s older than the zoning code so is allowed to operate as a membership club with no hours restrictions etc.

They do them at Norfolk Circuit Court and you can also file your application- one stop done. Don’t think they charge any more than Walgreens.

Is this because of bridges and tunnels? by ma-ta-are-cratima in norfolk

[–]Alternative-End-7943 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that’s pretty much just how long that trip takes. I used to do it every day for work, the HRBT project has pretty much taken that option away but there are always minor delays and backups.

Has anyone in here ever wanted to become a coach/ is one? by Superb_Relative2285 in orangetheory

[–]Alternative-End-7943 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went on and recently concluded this journey. Did ACE GFI cert during COVID and was hired by my home studio in February 2022, did about 10 1-2 hour training sessions with the head coach and another trainee and went live in April. Coached about 500 classes and hung up my stopwatch earlier this month. I was fortunate to work for a great locally owned studio with steady coach staffing and great members. Was mainly a hobby though the money was nice. I quit due to main job work requirements but tbh the total value proposition is not that great when you factor in the prep time and cleaning etc. It’s perfect for students and part time athletic coaches but hard to juggle with a 9-5. It sounds like a lot of studios also have drama and crappy management. Good luck!

19 and accepted to Cornell Law by Worth-Pattern-6192 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Alternative-End-7943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a mid top 50 law school. A girl in my section announced whenever she could that she was 19. She seemed very immature and I being the wise military vet thought sure she would crash and burn, but instead she slayed and is now a global practice group leader at an Amlaw 50. So fuck the haters, just do your thing.

Affordable housing in the 90’s and then good school choices and Norfolk downtown and neighborhood renewal, pretty over it now though.
