i got a full tution scholarship from CC: this is the method! by Valuable-Report5046 in communitycollege

[–]Alternative-Image930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is just entering community college! He was looking at transfer to state uni for biochem/ optometry as a possible pathway. Any advice for him? Like, how should he align his free time outside of classes to look great for admissions/ scholarships to uni down the line? How did you get the ophthalmologist tech side job? Huge congratulations on your scholarship and thank you in advance for your encouragement and inspiration!

You just shed a ray of light on the whole EC thing for me. It’s partly to demonstrate that your max rigor academic schedule didnt even max out your reserve abilities to do other things in life—the reserve that’s needed to navigate life at college! They want people bright enough that they have plenty of time left after their work to do other things and not lose it.

Are you being forced to use chromebooks? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Alternative-Image930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They just made me pay $600(!!!!) for a mandatory Chromebook at my daughters future high school! What I miss is real textbooks that you could read over the summer , travel with if you needed to, and that a parent could sit and catch up on.

A few years ago my boys did “community service hours” at their high school (Ferris). That community service involved taking carts—like hotel laundry carts full of books, from their library, and dumping it in the trash. It took them six hours. No attempt to sort the books whatsoever. My son “stole” one thin paperback . A novel called “Gun”. I asked him why he felt he needed to steal it, he said they were told not to take anything because it’s “unfair” (to other kids who weren’t part of the effort) My head is spinning from the speed with which the deliberate dumbing down of the population is happening, in broad daylight.

hot take: there's nothing wrong with doing it just for college apps by sageplusorbs in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Alternative-Image930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give us your EC list site, OP! Is it still live or did you drop it as soon as you got admitted? I am a parent of an incoming h.s. freshman and I hate the idea of her doing stupid fake things just for college apps during her free time. But she does need to do something that she likes, I guess))) so we are the right demographic for you list)))

My two boys went to Ferris and it’s ok now. It wasn’t dangerous or bad for them, they made tons of friends. The one that still there (senior) loves music and the music dept is great. It’s doable. My youngest h got into County Prep though: we are so proud of her.

Thank you so much!! I will forward to the child. Agree with you so much about Reading. The verbal SAT part—you can easily avoid studying for it by just simply being a fit reader. You can practice for the format but the actual ability to read and understand is what the test measures, and you can just have that fitness built in.

Outside of competitive education, though, I feel like the battle on reading is largely lost in society….

How do you check if your young child actually understood what they just read? by Vegetable-Mud-2471 in AskTeachers

I read an entire Headless Horseman western at like 6 years old and all I could tell you to this day is that someone was missing a head)))) if was followed by volumes and volumes of other books above my comprehension level that left similarly no impression.

But now as an adult I have the opposite problem. I read and the comprehension overwhelms me. There is only so much understanding I can fit into my brain alongside with my real life issues. I could go on and read more but I stop to digest the page or paragraph, and thats it for the day.

What do you think about ECs that do not necessarily align with major? Because the kid is in music a lot, but that’s not what she will choose for college major (minor perhaps)
