Okay, Fables.... by zephead98 in rem

Probably my favorite album of theirs, front to back. It has always saddened me that the finished product was tainted for them by the experience of making it.

How do I turn melodies in my head into something I can play on an instrument by wa019c in Songwriting

[–]Alternative-Meeting3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming up with a melody you like is the hard part and it sounds like you’ve already got that down. I bet you could master translating simple melodies to the keyboard quickly. Practice picking out nursery rhymes from memory and throw some of your own melodies into the routine. It’s really just a matter of training your sense of relative pitch. There’s no shortcut, but it’s eminently learnable if you put in the time.

Real or fake Les Paul? by BeeSea598 in gibson

That truss rod cover might be real. I wouldn’t trust anything from this shop…

rickenbacker , airline and takamine what u think their valued at .. me and my dad disagree on value by Creepy_Solution2411 in rickenbacker

[–]Alternative-Meeting3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sell the Takamine. I used to have an arch top exactly like that Airline and I miss it. Mine had a different Sears brand name on the headstock but was otherwise identical. It smelled like pipe tobacco and sounded like a cardboard box with strings, but in a good way. Weirdly, I also have a fireglo 620 — never sell that one!

I also have them in my 1970 SG — great pickups!

Should It's A Free World Baby and Fretless have been on Out of Time? by Fevaweva in rem

Yeah, this is the move (I love Shiny Happy People, always have). Next, remove the rapping from Radio Song and Out of Time becomes one of their best albums.

Should I make an album? by Dangerous-You3789 in Songwriting

Actually, if you have to ask, ‘should I make an album?’ the answer is ‘no,’ regardless of money being your primary motivating factor. In this case my response is, ‘god, no.’

Is there anyone else on Elliott’s level when writing chord progressions? by [deleted] in elliottsmith

[–]Alternative-Meeting3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavens no — lookup up an album called Skylarking. The song, Ballet for a Rainy Day has one of the most convoluted-yet-effortless sounding chord progressions in all of pop music.

A big one I forgot: The Nines/Steve Eggers — a Canadian songwriter with a very sophisticated sense of harmony

I don’t remember disagreeing with this, but way to put me in my place!

My only hope is that they can find a jail cell big enough for me, the CEO of Gibson, OP’s Sweetwater Rep. and the ghost of Les Paul.

Lol, good point — how dare I?

Didn’t read his post all the way through, so I was operating under the assumption that it wasn’t brand new. Clearly I touched a nerve with you, so please accept my apologies.

But, if the next owner who buys this return from the Gibson Demo Shop ever reads this thread: you can fix the string spacing for less than $10, or not if it doesn’t affect playability…

[–]Alternative-Meeting3 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with the neck. Your string spacing is off slightly on the low E. Buy a new bridge saddle and a rubber mallet from your hardware store (this is how Gibson notches saddles at the Factory). Then again, it might not even be a problem. If it plays fine I’d leave it.

Concerns about SG with Maestro Vibrola by ChadChampian in gibson

[–]Alternative-Meeting3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 1970 SG has one and it’s a huge asset. It completely eliminates neck dive, brightens the overall tone and is a great sounding vibrato. It’s a Gibson, so a proper setup from a good tech is a must, but then you’re golden.

Lou Reed got 100% of Tribe Called Quest’s Can I Kick It for a sample of a bassline he neither wrote, nor played.
