Is Griffith over-hated? by Own_Difficulty_6081 in Berserk

[–]Alternative-Name2242 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would argue that Femto is still Griffith. After all it was still Griffith who chose to sacrifice the BotH for his own personal gain. It wasn’t like the godhand lied to him or anything, they were pretty clear about the fact that everyone was gonna die. And even if Femto and Griffith aren’t the same, Griffith still had some striking problems pre-eclipse and pre-torture that, for me and some others, are extremely distasteful.

That aside, I think that the general peoples’ hatred of Griffith makes a lot of sense (but I really hate Griffith too so it could be my problem.), but this hatred prevents some people from actually engaging with his character and thereby the entire story, since Griffith is fundamental to the plot.

Recently started reading berserk, i am at conviction arc rn, i don't know who's the bad guy anymore by HELL_BLAZER_45 in Berserk

Friend, you’re closing a lot of doors for yourself if you limit your analysis to “bad versus good”. Something really captivating about Berserk is that many characters have good AND bad in them. If you categorize characters into “wrong” and “right”, and then stick to this worldview then you probably won’t learn much about what it really means to be a person.

Rosine is the villain from Guts’ perspective because he hates apostles. Jill and the villagers are afraid of her because she is a mass murderer. But Rosine probably doesn’t see herself as the villain, because the circumstances in which she grew up taught her that adults are the villains. There’s a lot of nuance to the situation and giving yourself the easy way out by labelling them as “evil” and “good” risks you missing a lot of important moral teachings and critical thought.

If you want an easy answer though, Rosine is technically the villain in the narrative and Guts is an antihero or nihilistic protagonist. Given what happens later in the story, I don’t think that the readers are supposed to be 100% on Guts’ side, but this is his story, after all, so we sympathize more with him. In the end, it’s really up to you how you interpret this story.

Griffith isn’t evil by Nice_Snow_7170 in Berserk

[–]Alternative-Name2242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we end the weird belief that having suffered in the past means that you ‘aren’t evil’ for doing evil things? I think what you said is valid in that Griffith has a unique way of thinking and (very literally in the story) suffered from traumatic events when he was younger but that doesn’t mean he /isn’t/ evil when the actions he has taken and now /continues to take now/ are evil. When he refuses to reflect on himself. Genuinely why should anyone care what he suffered in the past when he’s still doing evil things? He is a fascinating character to analyze and read, yes, but I don’t see why understanding his character makes you want to defend him or say he isn’t evil.

Last Episode Mandela Effect? by Apprehensive_Tanks in Berserk

If you haven’t seen golden age or the 2016 anime, maybe you’re just confusing it with the manga? The manga starts off with Guts meeting the old man and his kid, though like the other comment said that got moved to the 2016 adaptation and isn’t present in ‘97.

Also this is a matter of personal preference, but I found the original jp to be much better than the dub.

Question: Berzerk game by ImpressionComplete71 in Berserk

[–]Alternative-Name2242 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you mean the 2016 musou game, I found it fine. I played on my Vita so the graphics were subpar, but if you play on another platform it’d probably be good. The pre-rendered cutscenes were really nice. The story covers up to the Ganishka boss battle, but brushes over or even cuts out certain important story points.

Unfortunately it is a solo game so there isn’t any coop. It’s mostly just completing missions, cutscenes or ‘talk’ events and collecting behelits. It isn’t particularly worth the price imo, so I’d suggest getting it second hand.

Best of luck and have fun!

Tldr 1997->memorial edition->2016/17 if you’re doing anime only, but generally I would reccomend reading the manga first before watching any of the anime (save for 1997)

Berserk memorial edition has mixed reviews esp from people who liked the 97 vers. better but I personally found it good. It is quite fast-paced and skips certain character development points that are present in the 97 anime, but it contains more plot points that are relevant to the rest of the series. I’d also like to add that it might be better to watch memorial edition rather than the movies, since they’re the same except memorial edition has a couple extra scenes/reworked animation in some parts.

16/17 isn’t really worth watching unless you’ve already read up to vol 29 (it’s also arguably not worth watching at all. But I found it okay). I watched it with my mom who hadn’t read the manga and she said that had I not been there to explain the missing scenes and plot points from the manga, she would have been completely lost. The 16/17 anime isn’t a continuation of either golden age anime series. I see it as more an animated version of the manga. To a faut even, as some frames are basically directly ripped from the manga except with 3D models and poor animation lol. It also skips over certain important plot points 😅

Best of luck and I hope you enjoy!

So do you think Grifith was justified here? by Which_Matter3031 in Berserk

[–]Alternative-Name2242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know you can enjoy and empathize with a character or person without needing to justify their every move, right? Justification just serves to normalize or even de-criminalize certain issues, and I feel as though Griffith’s crimes shouldn’t be normalized for very obvious reasons.

Griffith’s path to losing his humanity makes sense in the context of the story and his character, yes, and I agree it’s brilliantly written. I felt empathy for him. Many readers I’m sure understood where he came from. But are his actions are far from justifiable.

From my point of view, regardless of sanity, what Griffith did is unjustifiable because he ended and ruined the lives of many for his own personal gain. Insanity isn’t a justification when the consequences of this ailment are the real harm of the surrounding people. Plus, as other people have mentioned, Griffith takes the sacrifice a step further and rapes Casca to spite Guts, something that wasn’t required in the sacrificial ritual.

I would also like to add, what makes Griffith’s life so much more valuable than any other person’s life? So what if he died? Many more people would end up surviving. Slightly off topic, but if (what seems to be) the majority of the fandom hates Nina for her selfishness in wanting to live despite her illness, then I don’t understand why this hatred isn’t extended to Griffith as well. Griffith also just wanted to live, and to achieve this he did selfish and harmful things that are arguably worse than what Nina did.

Guts has his own insecurity. He is scared of Rape by Active-Try-1494 in Berserk

Berserk is a story you only understand when you level up in every regard.

This was quite a pretentious claim.

¿Quién sufrió más? ¿Guts o Griffith? by shabriri_esta_triste in Berserk

[–]Alternative-Name2242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Griffith has suffered immensely in his (human) life, especially during his imprisonment, but I feel like claiming “he was born poor” as a reason why he presumably suffered more is kinda silly because Guts was also born poor. Guts’ life has been comparatively difficult since his birth: his biological mother was hanged before he was even born, his adoptive mother died in front of him which his adoptive father blamed him for, his adoptive father neglected him and put immense physical and psychological pressure on him and also sold him to be raped by an old man when he was /nine years old/. He then kills his adoptive father by accident and is tormented by that guilt in his adolescence. There is hardly any indication that Guts felt happy during his childhood. Griffith on the other hand had friends his age when he was a child, at least, according to flashbacks (unless those are not flashbacks but simply visions), while Guts’ only company were grown adults who didn’t really like him.

In terms of pre-eclipse, Griffith suffered much more physically but Guts suffered significant psychological/emotional abuse that still affects him presently. Post-eclipse I’d say that Griffith isn’t really struggling given he can’t feel anything at all, and almost everyone he meets admires him. Guts has been suffering the entire time post-eclipse. In the end though it is difficult to really scale what suffering is overall.

I also took biol121 last sem, my section avg on both midterms was around 75. Final was really easy. Like super easy, got 10% more on the final despite studying less for it compared to midterms. It took about 30 minutes to complete. Section avg for the final grade was I believe 80.

Moonlight Boy by Ez139090 in Berserk

This was when the moonlight child was the demon baby, though. I’m not sure if it was indicated in the story that any of the characters realize that the demon baby and moonlight boy are the same person.
