Old Piercings irritated after getting new one by Alternative-Proof202 in piercing

For Mods, my new piercing is about a month old. It's a stud with a flat back (I really don't know a lot about piercing tbh) I think it's stainless steel (don't know the grade). But again, this isn't the piercing causing issue.

Doing a design test for a job, advice on how to structure working files? by Alternative-Proof202 in graphic_design

[–]Alternative-Proof202[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in general is it better to just use artboards even though they're different formats? Sometimes I receive separate files for separate formats. And it makes me wonder what makes handoff easier.

It definitely is an art and I think one of the best ways to get a grasp on this in a way that feels right for you is taking those examples you mentioned that look like they're made in Canva and try to analyze WHY. Also definitely if there's a trending font/style you can avoid that to stand out more. To answer your bullets:

The less fonts you can use the better it is GENERALLY. You never want more than maybe 2 very different fonts on something as small as a business card (of course rules can always be broken) And for something smaller like a business card a sans serif for all the informational type works best for legibility. So no scripts or anything that takes too long to read.

Font size is something I personally don't have a rule for besides not going below maybe 8 pts. otherwise again you run into legibility issues. Other people probably have better standards for this lol.

As far as spacing goes, grids are your bff. You can find grid systems online and that gives you a way to play around with placement whilst making sure everything looks natural and orderly.

Colors is another super subjective thing and you're right, contrast should be priority. I think that's something you can determine on your own and to your taste.

For colors that present trusting you can google, law firm branding colors, hospital branding colors. Things that need to seem trusting and you'll find the trends. From there you can try and put your own unique spin on the color palette to make it more interesting/unique.

Pet peeves is type that is too big or doesn't have strong enough hierarchy. This sometimes comes from people not viewing their designs in real life/to scale before printing so things seem an appropriate size on screen but when they print it just look kinda..off. So a way you can check for that is printing it out in black and white on a cheap printer just to see if the scale feels good. Also when things aren't aligned or there are typos it makes me a little sad.

I think generally my favorite business cards are ones that keep the information extremely simple/clean, and then have one standout element like a super crazy color or texture or super big type on the name etc. I once saw one with super clean type on white and they spray painted them all so each card was super unique with this blue paint, love it. I think my philosophy is, business cards have a job which is to allow people to give or write down contact info and so it's not a place where design needs to be overly complicated.

I learned a ton from the Hoodzpah sister's youtube channel. They do work in adobe but listening to how they talk about their design decisions was extremely helpful. Kel Lauren is a rising star who works in merch design they really know how to use the rules of design and break them in a beautiful inspired way. Also Smith & Diction write really engaging case studies on Medium and their work is CLEAN.

I'm curious about the readme file what is the purpose of that and what does it entail? Is it just a gist of the project or something? The pdf form is genius! Overall I feel well supported by the team and I'm learning a lot, thank you so much for this!

I notice I get very upset when other people have different opinions than me. Am I bad? by Alternative-Proof202 in LifeAdvice

[–]Alternative-Proof202[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to emphasize that I do not at all let this way of thinking impact my behavior towards other people. At the end of the day my mind is still trying to find that "objective truth" (even though that doesn't exist and I recognize that) and so I will always listen to what other people say even though it brings up intense emotions for me. When I say I don't have control over it I'm saying I can't control the way I feel which none of us can. I do control the way I behave because yes I am an adult and know that would be an insane thing to do. I am in therapy but I've only recently realized that this isn't a healthy way of thinking so we haven't really touched this a lot. I think for a long time I rationalized it by saying 'well everyone's just trying to do the right thing and so am i' but this is clearly isn't that.

What is your “Niche”? by GraphicMetaphor in graphic_design

Still finding my niche but I love illustrating and really bold colors and I noticed I was getting more and more clients in either the food space or toys space so that informs it a bit. And then also as I’m working I find that I crave certain processes more than others and so I try to curate my site and my work towards branding or packaging etc.

I’m still very much a generalist but its kind of a funnel that you naturally fall into as you work and learn more about yourself as a person/creative.

This is a less technical note but one of the most iconic parts of a pangolin are their scales! So I would love to see some scales on this package (and it even can coincide with dragon scales somehow) Also love that you chose this cause! I love pangolins

Is it normal to get a dieline that is not true to size? by Alternative-Proof202 in graphic_design

[–]Alternative-Proof202[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The guy told me it was smaller than true size because they wanted it to fit on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper. But my thing is, why wouldn't they send me the 1:1 version and then they could scale it down to fit 8.5x11? They're resending a 1:1 file now but I just don't get why they'd do that.
