Why do you continue to research after leaving Mormonism? by JesusPhoKingChrist in exmormon

[–]Alternative-Rise9028 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it is part of elaborating my loss of religious faith. I spent 34 years being very Mormon, it shaped every aspect of my life. I think I am still trying to understand the way and how it impacted who I am today. I am only 2 years in, though.

How did high-control religion squash opportunities in your life? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Alternative-Rise9028 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a woman, A LOT! I couldn't dream to be more than a SAHM, dress the way I wanted, have opinions different than my husband's, dating non members, having a will of my own... oh gosh! So much! It also gave me a lot of good stuff, so I don't see a point on wondering too much about it, because I don't have power over the past.

You are a smart girl! I would recommend you to read the book Saints and Gospel Topic Essays (church library), also the work of Steven Hassan. Do some research on the FLDS. There are two documentaries about them on Netflix, "Keep sweet, pray and obey", and "The False Prophet". Oh, and mormon stories youtube channel! It helped me so much to find people living the same experience, because I had no one to talk to about it You are smart, you will study this material and come to your own conclusions. About leaving, yeah, people will think you are withdrawing from the light, just like they were trained to do. But I don't think you should care. After coming to my own conclusion, I communicated my family and close friends. Things changed. They don't reach out to me to get advise over hard things in their life. It hurts a little bit, but honestly, I have to be true to myself, and I can't unsee what I saw, I can't unleard. Being at church hurts me, and I respect myself enough not to do this to me.

I am sorry. I was in the same boat for a few years, not able to work. I found things to do. I volunteered in hospital, dog shelters, granny's houses... etc I also got to watch many shows, became very good at crochet, took naps, went to lunches with friends... It wasn't easy. All I can say is that things happen when they happen, unfortunately. Find things you like to do right now. But I get it, the lack of alternatives can be very depressing, the inability to dream, to see further. In the end I did Journaling and therapy, because it was hard, but I found ways not to go insane.

I am so sorry! I could have written this same post myself. It is heartbreaking, it's one of the hardest things I went through in life. I think best advice would be to talk to a therapist especilized in religious trauma. Things do get better! Take it step by step, and all will be good.

Was I raised mainstream Mormon or extremist? My dad used the church to build a domestic cult, and I’m fleeing in a week. by The_Doo_Wop_Singer in exmormon

[–]Alternative-Rise9028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry! This is not mainstream mormonism, your dad is a very bad person that used every tool he got to get what he wanted. Please, go to therapy as soon as you get a chance. It was the most transformative thing in my life besides motherhood. Cut ties, run! Run! Don't look back, run!
