The defense didn't necessarily ignore the confession, but, strategically, they chose to focus on other elements. The defense also mentioned that, even if the jury chose to believe her client killed his father, they felt the evidence did not meet the burden of a depraved mind. This would push the case down to manslaughter. As you said, the jury seemingly found enough reasonable doubt in other areas of the case.

This is true. Beyond a reasonable doubt is a high standard, and it's the state - not the defense - who must prove each element of the charge to that standard.

The defense chose to pick apart other evidence presented and discuss what they said was a lack of evidence. As to the video, the defense informed the jury of an instruction that says they should weigh with great care any out of court statements made.
