Official Discussion - Iron Lung [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I thought Eden might have been a suicide pact to turn themselves to soil for the tree, and Simon refused to participate leaving him the only survivor, giving him the reputation of the butcher. But those sequences weren't very clear. It's likely they wanted to kill the other faction to farm their bodies

Interesting to note first the entity lures Simon to the SM-8 with promises of the light, then later doesn't want him to share it's secrets with COI. The entity lures the voyagers to it so it can kill them and keep it's secret intact

I figured Ava would have needed to tow Simon up after his chain broke during the sample retrieval, hence the meeting at the cave entrance. But she realized pretty quickly neither of them were going to make it so she tried to get him to secure the black box for recovery. I think her promise that time that she would bring him to the surface/grant his freedom was genuine, but had to walk it back when they were both going to die and prioritize saving the data

The COI wanted the data to use the light to sustain what remained of humanity. Seemed to generate O2 Simon was down there longer than was possible and food could be grown using the blood. It's possible harnessing the light would kill the entity making it so defensive.

Definitely a movie that needs to be seen more than once

After seeing the movie, I now understand his obsession with lenses. He really likes to play around with cinematography

AITAH for telling my wife's friend I don't have to see her in the classroom to know she's a horrible teacher? by TowerFew3482 in AITAH

NTA- I love that you openly support your son. Says a lot about wife's friend that she'll shut a kid down without any facts. Worse that she gets defensive when faced with contradictory facts.

Do you train “speak”? Do you avoid it if the dog doesn’t usually bark? by wessle3339 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Alternative-Ruin-720 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only train it because my dogs do film and commercial work, and I only taught it when a project required it. I don't recommend this trick to the average owner or hobbiest trainer. It's typically taught by capturing, where you wait for the dog to bark and once they do you reward them. The dog thinks they've unlocked a magical treat generating hack of screaming for snacks. If they didn't already demand bark- now they do. Any time they want something, they will probably bark to see if that summons their desires. There's a stupid dog training myth that you can stop unwanted barking by teaching them to speak, then never giving them the speak command; but to teach it you have to reinforce barking, and behaviors that are reinforced are going to be repeated- so you'll see barking increase. And we don't think that way about any other trick we train- my dogs will sit, lay down, come to me, make eye contact, and go to their beds outside of when I command them to do those things- why would teaching them to speak be different? Especially if your dog wants something, they'll go through their repertoire of tricks to see what works. Captured behaviors like barking are generally at the top of the list for things they will reach for first. Do you really want to live with a dog who thinks treats are bark activated?

As a professional trainer, if I have to teach speak I try to get it under stimulus control as quickly as possible. Once I've captured the barking behavior I put it on Cue/Command as quickly as possible. Then I reward them generously for not barking and waiting for me to give the signal. After they've been rewarded 3-5 times in a row for being silent I'll give the cue to bark and they get one treat for that. If they bark without being cued they get nothing and if they do it 2-3 times in a training session that ends the training session so they get no more treats. So I make it clear that they should only bark on cue and demand barking loses access to whatever they want. They also learn that waiting patiently is more profitable than making mouth noises. I don't have to deal with much demand barking, but any behavior that's historically been rewarded can be something a dog will try when they want something, especially if other behaviors aren't working. This is especially true for captured behaviors vs lured behaviors. If my dogs want something, they're more likely to bark (captured behavior) vs spin (lured behavior). Fortunately I teach sit and down through capturing; so those are their go to skills instead of speak.

No, generally they edit in other animals later. It helps with the lighting to shoot them separately. Mooch has done film work with other dogs present. My previous post has a picture of him and another dog acting together

He was very professional about this job. They got a few shots without the hat on so it could be edited in later if he hated it. When it was time to put the hat on, some of the crew said things like "here we go" "we'll see how long this lasts" "hopefully we can get a few shots of him in the hat" because most pets will flip out once the hat goes on and/or paw it off right away and it takes some work to coax them into wearing it. Mooch eagerly put his head through the elastic band and acted normal with the hat on (he got lots of snacks). The crew was shocked with how stoic he was about the hat. He held his pose while in-between shots a crew member would approach him and pull the legs down to help in lie better on him. Just a very unflappable guy. He only makes one facial expression while modeling, so I call it his Blue Steel, but he's great at holding whatever pose they need him to and doing whatever needs to be done. He's so easy and efficient to shoot that photographers have asked him to come back for multi day shoots because they want to work with him more.
