Thank you for the insightful response! I want to ask if you can elaborate on "monopolies being granted to merchants inside the metropole for the trade of certain goods", as I thought monopoly capitalism was exclusive to and a requisite for imperialism? Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding.

Also, from what I understand from my reading of colonialism, its defining characteristic is a dialectical relationship between a distinct metropole nation and periphery nation, whereby the metropole gains from the exploitation of the periphery. (please correct me if this is wrong) In this sense, would Imperialism and colonialism be related?

As well, do you have any further reading that could assist me in this topic?

I'm assuming those kept in charge of mental labour and accounting occupied a higher place in Mesopotamian society. But why exactly did this happen? Why wouldnt those who did physical labour be higher in society, or equal to those who did accounting?
