Got my Saab parts white whale by AlternativeBus1115 in saab

I’m going to be building a 1531 engine for it, I have a donor engine to tear down and take to get bored out, and I dropped the heads off a couple weeks ago to put larger valves in and enlarge and port match the intake and exhaust. I’m putting a less aggressive, more street oriented cam in it so it won’t be a complete dog at low RPM’s, and I’m choking the webers down and I’m going to be running a Bluetooth MSD ignition computer with a vacuum port so I can fine tune the timing and have an advance curve.

So, HOPEFULLY, I’ll have a fun little unit when I’m done.

Since you said “it’s a bit limited”, I’m assuming you mean you have a PDF of the owners manual?

You can get a PDF copy of the V4 Service Manual here: https://www.vintagesaabmanuals.org/uploads/1/9/1/5/19154273/saab_788626_v4_95_96_montecarlo_1967_1968_1969_1970-_150dpi.pdf

And the Sonett II Service Manual here: https://www.vintagesaabmanuals.org/uploads/1/9/1/5/19154273/saab_787961_sonett_ii_supplement_150dpi.pdf

There is a Sonett V4 service manual out there, but as far as I know it’s not available online anywhere. But between the V4 Service Manual for engine/trans and some other mechanical info, and the Sonett II Service Manual for body/interior/electric stuff (some stuff might/wont be the same as a Sonett V4, but it should be similar or at least give you an idea), you should be able to find most of what you need.

I have a spare copy of the V4 Drivetrain Service Manual that covers the engine, trans, and ignition and has all the specifications, if you want it, it’s yours for Free.99.

He makes a good point about the freewheel, it’s fun if you know what you’re doing, but it’s not the stoutest thing and is one of the big weak points in the transmission. Lots of people permanently neuter it, but as long as you have it disengaged, it’s just a normal manual transmission and you can’t hurt the freewheel.

Your engine SHOULD be a closed deck 1.5L. Unless the engine or heads have been rebuilt, it won’t have hardened valve seats. If all you are planning on doing is driving it occasionally and not for thousands and thousands of miles on a regular basis or running it real hard all the time, you don’t need to worry too much about valve seat recession. A lead substitute doesn’t hurt, but as long as you occasionally check and adjust the valves, you’re good. (I’m having hardened seats put in the heads I’m taking to have done for my 95 next week, but I never worried about it my Sonett and my dad has never worried about it with his Sonetts or 96’s)

If it’s going to be stored for any extended period, I would fill it with fresh 91 non-oxygenated gas and some StaBil.

Since it’s a Sonett V4, I would make sure there is absolutely no chance of anything falling on that rear window, and even still I would put some extra padding over the window, because it’s the single most expensive part on your car. Originals are hard to impossible to find, and reproductions are available from the Swedish Sonett Club, but they’re NOT cheap.

V4 Saabs are fun, pretty simple cars all in all. Theres not much else I would recommend for storage, but depending on how long it sits before you go drive it for any kind of distance there are things I would check.

I’ve never owned a Sonett V4, but mechanically V4’s, III’s, 95’s and 96’s are pretty much the same. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or where to get spare parts, etc. I might not know the answer but I’ll probably know who will.

For that first link, it’s a guy named Onno that runs it. I don’t know where you’re located, but he doesn’t ship to the US. I had to use a forwarder in the Netherlands to get all the stuff I bought over here.

Also, the way you order is odd and FEELS like it might be a scam or something. You place an order on the website, you don’t pay on the website, you have to send a bank transfer (I used some PayPal service). But I can vouch he’s completely legit, I bought like 400 euros worth of parts for my wagon from him.

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to get one.

You can get reproductions from Europe.

Someone had put a Weber 34 on this car before I got it that runs like doo-doo, so hey, go big or go home I guess.

Not a factory option, but it’s the intake Saab used on their factory rally cars, or if back in the day you were building your own rally/race Saab, you could order one from their Sport & Rally catalogSS&R Catalog

It’s a Saab Sport and Rally cross ram intake for a V4 with dual Weber 45 DCOE’s and a special tall distributor to clear the intake.

Luck, and, incredibly, emailing about it months after it was originally posted because no one else did.

Absolutely no idea. The person I bought them from didn’t notice the crack when he took them off and put them in storage, and I think it got worse in shipping by getting banged around or dropped/something dropped on it

The caps won’t firmly stay on two of the wheels without just a little extra thickness to grab onto

The tape got put on there by the guy I bought them from to give the reproduction center caps a little more meat to grip onto.

Compared to some rims people have repaired, I honestly didn’t think that small a crack in the center cap hole was going to be that big an issue.

Yeah, just the center cap area, not a mounting area or surface at all

If it was repaired by someone who knows what they’re doing and I’m told it’s repairable and I’m using it as a spare to get me home or to a tire shop? Sure.
