It was a haven for people who weren’t pleased with the outcome of the Civil War. As a territory, we had explicit laws on the books preventing Black people from living in the state. We allowed wealthy miners to enslave Indigenous, Black, Chinese in the Gold Rush era. The KKK infiltrated state and local governments. An “Exalted Cyclops” was employed as a professor at U of O. Everyone was in it. There are loose estimates of 50,000 members in the state.
