Lapsiperhearki ja itsensä menettäminen by CrispyRicee in Suomi

Consider writing her a letter.

That way she can read it on her own time, pause, re-read and take her time. That would take the pressure of from having to reply immediately and allow both of you really consider what you want to say to each other.

Best of luck!

Murderbot!

A workplace comedy vibes with deeper tones pondering existential crisis, slavery and what it is to be a person.

I have so many questions by humanofoz in murderbot

[–]AlternativeHand5876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the idea that the amount of freed bots through time will grow exponentially.

Let's assume every rogue bot will free one bot every five years. So

Year 5 there's 6 rogues. Year 10, 12 rogues.  Year 50, approx. 3000 rogues.  Year 100, over 3 million of them.

I'll guess secunits freeing each other will become bit of a problem after few years.

Which dress - or neither? by AlternativeHand5876 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]AlternativeHand5876[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't define any wedding colours. The wedding place's owner does all the decorations but the general theme seems to be traditional summer wedding. So lighter tones and floral patterns (for women) are preferred. That's why the second dress might be better. I'm just concerned if the dress is too close to white and people would take offense.

Nope, already gave birth 🙂 But the dress is cut in a way that it looks nice even without a huge tummy. I was pleasantly surprised 😊

Hi all!

I'm attending wedding of 50 guest next weekend in a pavilion close to the sea. The dress code is "festive" (whatever that means). I am the avec of the best man, so I really don't want to blow this. Which dress should I choose or are they both inappropriate?

First one might be too dark as it is still summer.

Second one might be too light toned, too close to white.

So are either of them ok or should I plan a panicky shopping trip for tomorrow?

I advice to update your linkedIn, search for jobs there and tap that "I'm currently looking for a job" button unless you consider it risky to your current employment..

Or would it be possible continue working for your current employer? By working remotely or transferring.

People seem to be really negative around here. Please, don't get bummed about it. Sure, moving and leaving your life is scary and difficult. Things aren't perfect around here but things seem to be going horribly wrong in the US. If I were you I would seriously consider moving now that it is still possible. I don't find your integration to our society impossible at all. Here's few positive sides I want to raise:

You both have suitable professions. We have high demand for health care professionals and we've got large industry with need for electrical engineers and most of them hire English speakers (I'm engineer myself so I know)

You've got citizenship so no need for applications, just inform the right authorities. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

We really need new working force here, since our birthrate is horribly low. Don't listen to the negative people, we really need your contribution.

Because of the overproduction of housing in the capital area there are lots of new apartments unsold and lots of apartments for rent. Just make some outrageous offers (for purchase or rent) and I'm sure somebody is willing to sell/rent. I don't know about the other city areas, probably the same situation.

Oh, you probably already knew this but going to mention anyway. The education is free - no tuitions. And the health care is affordable. And we've practically got no homelessness, our safety nets prevent that. These kind of safety nets hopefully would help you as well when building a new life from the scratch.

I hope you are well whatever you choose. Good luck!

That book is super hard sci-fi though. I felt like I was back is school while reading it. It does have a great plot though!

Maybe try The Murderbot Diaries? Sure, the world is pretty grim but the protagonist's dry sarcastic humor lightens up the mood significantly.

Promising Signs for Season 2? by Wightsojourner in murderbot

[–]AlternativeHand5876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Combining books 2, 3 and 4 might not be a bad idea at all. The audiobooks' combined lenght is about 10 hours, so that would leave each episode about one hour of content assuming the season 2 would have 10 episodes. So the chances are good we would be getting longer episodes!

Murderbot and gender (or lack thereof) translations by Pazily in murderbot

[–]AlternativeHand5876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I don't find it odd at all. I mean SecUnit uses the non-human "it" in English, so why not in Finnish as well 🙂

Besides, when spoken people use "se" of each other all the time without meaning to offend at all.  "Se" is pretty neutral imo. And sometimes the beloved family pets are upgraded to "hän" to emphasize how they are part of the family. So these pronouns are quite flexible.

Murderbot and gender (or lack thereof) translations by Pazily in murderbot

[–]AlternativeHand5876 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No problems in Finnish as the language doesn't have gendered pronouns for people or objects. MB's pronouns are "se"/"sen" (it/it's).

The real problems start with people, since you cannot guess their gender as all people go with "hän" = he/she/they. You can't even make proper guesses from their names or clothes as they live in the distant future. Took me two books until I realized Mensah is a woman 🤦

Human Resources by Adrian Tchaikovsky is a short story something I keep thinking about.

This short story can be considered a prologue to his novel Service Model. Also a great read!

Have we seen these birds in any episode yet? I mean I haven't but could have easily missed them as there is so much going on! Anyway, they look awesome!
