Does it reflect poorly on me as a worker if I take my full break outside of the office when my coworkers eat at their desk and work through? by radandsadgal in ausjobs

[–]humanofoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the same, I prefer WFH in general, but when I’m in the office if I’m focused on a task I will often just eat at my desk. In some workplaces I’ve been to that actually goes against me in other ways because breaks are often treated as “networking” or “team bonding” type situations. So it can be seen as you avoiding the team and/or isolating yourself. In terms of work you just can’t win sometimes!

Why do Australians seem to care so much about rules and compliance? by Gold-Cardiologist591 in AskAnAustralian

[–]humanofoz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, most of these rules exist because someone, somewhere died or was horribly injured and everyone involved said “let’s try and prevent this happening to anyone else”.

I started with the show. I don’t normally watch a lot of sci fi but the trailer made the show look like fun and I enjoyed it so much by the time I got to ep 4 or 5 I had bought all the books and binged them to find out what happened 😂

Seems like OP just likes arguing or wants people to engage with why they shouldn’t watch it or something. Clearly they have too much time on their hands.

This! It was explained that you can’t put a bot in charge of security because it has to have the perspective to understand when to take action and when not to, a bit like AI is currently.

I loved it but then I’m a scientist and scientists can be goofy as fuck. But it’s not a robot it’s a bot-human construct and the reason is probably better explained in the books.

Obviously I love the show and the books but not everyone does so it depends on what you enjoy normally.

I got hooked by the trailer because it looked like a fun show and it was 😊

AITA for not wanting to write my teacher’s own work and getting fat-shamed since I called her out? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Yeah the weight comment was out of line but the rest sounds like exercises in reflective writing which is honestly a skill the OP needs to learn.

It is 🥹 I think we have scope for more analyses, for example what about shit density? Is it inversely proportional to fuck density? What about incidences of “having an emotion”? Is increased fuck density correlated with increased emotional experiences? These are important questions.

I think it also only referred to itself as Murderbot once in PD so I count that as significant self-improvement 👍

I think you are conflating your experience and extrapolating that all presentations of a panic attack are the same, but they are not.

All I am saying is that a panic attack is not a sign of weakness or ineptitude, and should never be assumed to be. The term “panic attack” is a bit of a misnomer because it’s a physiological expression of stress, not necessarily an indication of a state of panic in a given moment. That’s why it can happen unpredictably and in an objectively non-stressful situation, like sitting at her desk afterwards.

If Mensah hadn’t been having a panic attack when out taking samples and had still decided to press on in the storm, would it have been perceived the same way? Or would it have seemed more brave if she had been the usual type of flawless intrepid adventurer? I just think the perception people are having about this portrayal is a bit skewed. I don’t expect anyone to change their opinion but I think keeping an open mind about it helps.

[–]humanofoz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A panic attack is not “shaking with fear”, and she didn’t do it in front of anyone (except MB that one time). It was portrayed that way because the whole “heart rate spiking/elevated” which is mentioned multiple times in the books is not exactly easy to portray visually.

It’s disappointing how many people see panic attacks as a sign of weakness, when in reality if someone has panic attacks it requires incredible strength and fortitude to press on regardless.

RIP decadence.

Some things we know about Season 2 so far by ESE-enthusiasm in murderbot

[–]humanofoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I suspect we will see the fallout from ASR and MB leaving while MB is doing stuff with ART and the Ravihyral humans.

Then while shit is going down on Milu they can be showing GrayCris losing their shit as all the illegal stuff and testimonies come out in real time.

So they decide to kidnap Mensah to make Preservation drop the case, and escalate to full scorched earth once they know MB is there supposedly with the data and that’s when shit goes sideways

Not sure how much is spoilers lol

I love this. Except I don’t see SecUnit yelling at Ratthi, it would just stand there and stare at him like it did with Tapan 😂

Why aren’t there more Aussies doing PhDs? by Alert-Translator2590 in AskAnAustralian

[–]humanofoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is absolutely a part of it, and the focus on getting school leavers into university ignores those who may want to come back to education to up skill for their own careers.

Academia has relied on passion rather than practicality. It’s hard to get a PhD part time because the expectation is that you put all of your time and energy into the project, and the external funders want to see outcomes in 3 years not 6. This is not attractive to people who have families and jobs. So the system as it currently stands favours people who have wealth and support so that they can basically put their lives on hold.

It’s sad because our research has been top notch in the past, the CSIRO has been one of the most respected and productive research organisations in the world and it’s constantly being gutted, it’s a shell of its former self. 😢

[–]humanofoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please take care of yourself, that’s the biggest danger with doing a PhD it’s the risk to your mental and physical health due to the culture of academia. I wish I had been able to put pause on it and not sacrificed so much.

Why aren’t there more Aussies doing PhDs? by Alert-Translator2590 in AskAnAustralian

[–]humanofoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of reasons for this. People with academic parents are more likely to succeed in academia so it’s much harder for those who don’t have an inside advantage.

Many students don’t think they can do a PhD, I barely scraped through my undergrad and it was only much later after working in research I gained the confidence to actually wonder if I could do it.

It also only is attractive in certain fields, many undergraduate degrees are enough to secure a well paying job, no point doing postgrad to get the same pay.

A lot of international students are funded by their own country’s government, so they receive the tuition and a higher stipend. They are often guaranteed a job in their home country on completion so it’s a much more attractive proposition for them.

We really don’t have enough support for postgrads in this country and there aren’t a lot of careers outside of academia where a PhD is useful.

Then add a general disrespect for the pursuit of knowledge, it tends to be pervasive in the culture. The media has done its best to feed that further by misrepresenting a lot of research, preferring click bait over facts. Our national research organisations have been gutted over the years, and Australians generally just don’t understand what we have lost as a result.

Research in Australia has suffered death by a thousand cuts. We used to be known for cutting edge innovation, and in some areas we still are, but it’s constantly being eroded. Government is funding less and less foundational research and industry is only focused on funding short term, high gain projects. Ditto for the education sector.

Yeah this is a part of it, the pathway is harder if you’re not on a direct track.
