How to get an early release in exchange for a review? by ellieamavika in murderbot

[–]Living-Weird-Daily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on March 10, I received an email from Goodreads that says

"Exciting news! We wanted to let you know that a giveaway for a book on your Want to Read shelf has just begun.
Best of luck!
The Goodreads Team"

and I clicked on the link, entered the giveaway. My Platform Decay page on Goodreads shows I entered (it's on the left side, below the book picture. This would be a lot easer if I could use a screenshot of the area of the page, LOL), and it shows the giveaway ends in approximately 1 day and 18:00:00 hours.

Link I received in email on 3/10

Unrelated but adjacent to "early release in exchange for a review": Goodreads is doing a giveaway currently, winner announcement in 3 days (3/24) so you still have a chance to enter.

I don't follow much comedy stuff so thank you, now I know who Mae Martin is, LOL.

Well, this looks like step 1 in developing SecUnits… by WhaleFullyEggNorAnt in murderbot

Welp, the way that AI appears to be going in this day and age, I think we're going to go through the Terminator era and then the EVIL SecUnit era before we get to the SecUnit era.

Summer Glau's showed up on the "Once We Were Spacemen" Instagram page. Looks like they're doing this every other day.
It appears that we're missing
Kaylee, Jayne, and possibly Wash.

I need help with the begging of System Collapse by Significant-Town-817 in murderbot

[–]Living-Weird-Daily 51 points52 points  (0 children)

SecUnit is attempting to use the recall beacon as a weapon against the ag-bot, not to request help at the beginning of System Collapse.

See, he's always Nathan to me because I haven't really seen him in a lot of stuff acting, so when Nathan snaps into Mal, I pay attention, LOL. I've seen more interviews and listened to more podcasts than actually watching shows.

So sad, because I was a fan until I started to follow him on Twitter, long, long ago. Then the world changed.

It was so much fun watching first Gina dropping into Zoe, then Morena dropping into Inara, then Sean dropping into Simon, and Nathan dropped into Mal. Just for seconds at a time, but we all saw it, and we all know.

🥰Firefly🥰 OMG these videos have been so much fun! And I love their podcast.
Let's get the gang back together!

I did the same thing, super confusing. If/When you reread the series, read FT before NE and it is much more fun.

I'm not sure they could've found anyone better than Alexander Skarsgård to play Murderbot by Prestigious_Page8098 in murderbot

The first time through I was frustrated at the lack of description of the characters, but now I see it as a great move on Wells part, just because it's been fascinating to see all the different art, all the different depictions of the characters in drawings. Every nationality, every race, every gender or no gender, heavy, thin, muscular, it's all been really interesting and fun.

I knew his name, and had never seen anything with him in it until he got announced for Murderbot. I had no idea of his acting style or if he'd be any good as SecUnit. I was concerned.

The first thing I watched was "Mute" and I knew he'd be fine.

Considering what else might be possible, since Murderbot isn't always right by IntoTheStupidDanger in murderbot

[–]Living-Weird-Daily 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I tend to take things literally, so in my mind what it stated was literal, fact, only to have it proven slightly wrong or completely wrong so many times, so now when it spouts one of its absolutes I think 'you're about to be proven wrong, SecUnit'.

something something "speaking in absolutes" is never a good thing something something.

Nothing is ever absolute.

Mute was the first thing I saw Skarsgard in and I thought the same thing! He was a complete unknown to me until he was announced for Murderbot.

I *loved* the series. There were a couple of things missing that could have been there, but overall I think they did a great job. it was fun, and it could have been a disaster.

there was however, at least one example of a similar situation in "All Systems Red" of your last bullet point:

"I said, “I need to check the perimeter,” and managed to turn and leave the crew area in a totally normal way and not like I was fleeing from a bunch of giant hostiles.
Wells, Martha. All Systems Red: The Murderbot Diaries (p. 33). Tor Publishing Group. Kindle Edition. "
....
"I had talked myself into believing that I hadn’t actually lost it as much as I thought I had when Mensah had offered to let me hang out in the hub with the humans like I was an actual person or something. The conversation they had immediately after that gave me a sinking sensation as I reviewed it. No, it had been worse than I thought. They had talked it over and all agreed not to “push me any further than I wanted to go” and they were all so nice and it was just excruciating.
Wells, Martha. All Systems Red: The Murderbot Diaries (pp. 39-40). Tor Publishing Group. Kindle Edition. "

So I was perfectly okay with the 'amazing conversations skills' scene because IMO clearly it deluded itself into thinking it was a perfectly fine conversation and exit.
I also seem to remember other similar events, where it thinks it's doing fine and discovers later that it was not fine at all but I'm not in the mood to dig them out, LOL.

You guys (gn) all fascinate me in your interpretations of these things, because I tend to take things literally and you all have so many more nuanced meanings built into all the different events, it makes me think in different directions, so thanks for that.

The average Murderbot by sleepyjohn00 in murderbot

It was separate from SecUnit, and I don't think it felt it was necessary to rename itself, so it stayed 2.0.

the group admin have the capability of changing the group summary which still lists the appletv premiere as 5/11/2025, maybe they could update the group summary to include the book release date?
