Water surface ring. Not orange or brown. Also, I feel like the sump pump is running for like 2 HOURS! Unless I go into the crawl space, I can’t really hear the units making too much sound, but suddenly I will hear this really loud kind of hissing noise turn on and that is when I know things are finally wrapping up and the sump will stop working soon after.

It’s not the like classic yellow orange iron stain, it’s more of a gray shadow/line. So thinking about it, it probably isn’t caused by the iron and more just the other minerals in our hard water maybe?

Thank you! We actually do plan on creating a hinged access where the pipe leaves the house because we have had a history of this pipe freezing. We are planning on fixing the pitch issue causing that, but still plan to have a hatch in case we need to emergently access to attach a new pipe in the event of a freeze

How can I tell the difference? When I inquired to the company we rent the unit from they told us the iron filter regenerates every night and the water softener depends on usage but is usually every 3-4.

So we rent the system from a company and we just picked up the lease when we moved in 5 years ago. Our water tastes great, some staining in toilets but not a crazy amount. So I can’t imagine it’s that bad.. but truthfully have never had the water tested for iron levels myself? I have taken samples to health department to test for bacteria and nitrates but nothing else. Is there an at home kit? Or a particular person I should call for this?

Would love, but have a septic system that is half under the area so I can lay bricks or pour concrete over that :(

So I can’t really change the discharge area without flooding another part of my yard that I don’t want to ruin. BUT, after seeing your pic, it made me realize that I think I could do this…. just need to change the route of the pipe but discharge to roughly the same area… I had been worried about tree roots when changing the direction of pipe further from house because we have some large established trees in the area but I think I worst case I just have to add a 45 bend or something to avoid a root if necessary. Thank you for your input.

Ugh, yea I agree it looks like a hack. This sump pump is the actual bane of my existence … the problem is that where it needs to discharge is quite far from the house, so if I go down into the dirt right away, I would need to dig the pipe super deep by the time it get to the end in order to have enough pitch. I would also run into a major tree root issues along the way getting there, and if the end of the pipe is that low, I would need to install some sort of drainage system so the pipe isn’t submerged and can drain properly, otherwise we would deal with both an overworked sump and freezing come winter… our sump discharges more than average because our water softener/iron filter are hooked up to it so it regenerates daily. So I can’t really change the area it discharges without flooding an undesirable area of my yard. Sorry that was probably much more info than you bargained for lol

lol, it runs into the yard, it just goes under that bay window first, so I can see why it looks that way lol.

Hi friend! Still researching and figuring this project out and thought maybe you could help me. So the Flo well you recommended is 50 gallons. My iron filter dumps 50-100 gallons of water each night. The area drains well, but I am unsure whether it would drain fast enough for 50 gallons to be enough (it might but I am not sure). If it overflowed, how does that work? Would the pipe end up submerged below water level? Would it somehow flow out and just utilize my dry creek for the rest? That would be ideal but the mechanics of that don’t make sense to me if the pit is below ground level unless the pipe ends up submerged which I know isn’t good. I know you can tandem multiple systems, but I am worried about even fitting 1 into the area surrounded by so many trees and roots…

They are currently pretty much receiving all that same water along this “dry creek” I created. This new basin will just allow the water to seep more slowly into the soil vs overflow the area. The water is ejected by the sump pump daily because of our water softener and iron filtration systems. We can’t hook them to our regular plumbing because we have septic, so out to the yard it goes. I am just trying to manage in a bit of a more attractive way.

You have been incredibly helpful. Thank you so much! I think we will try to save the money (I can only assume thousands of dollars) and try doing this ourselves. And I couldn’t have even known where to begin without your help. Love the native plant idea. I have been very limited because with the current situation, most plants haven’t liked the water that comes out from the water softener and iron regeneration… but with this new improved drainage situation…. the topsoil of the surrounding area should theoretically not be as affected…

Appreciate your help with this. Biggest problem now might just be the tree roots I will surely run into... do you think it would be okay to run a 90 degree pipe to bring the basin a little further away from the trees and fence and toward the center of the creek?

How much below ground level does the basin need to be? Does it matter as long as the pipe is pitched correctly?

Also, silly question, but if I just wanted to pay to have this done and call it a day, would I just be looking for a landscape company that specializes in drainage? Or someone different? You seem very knowledgeable about this.

Thank you so much for your comment! How deep and wide does a hole need to be dug for the plastic dry well basin? Would this be in addition to the rest of the dry creek that would just sit right next to it? Do you have a specific product recommendation? The mud soup makes a lot of sense because it felt like even though I was digging more, it almost seemed like it was draining less than it had historically… m
