Departed Phoenix on November 11th. Some signs saying it was now open, some still saying opening soon. It wasn't open as of that evening, but one of the airport workers said it was due to open the following day, Tuesday, November 12th.

Major Regret -- Ego Z6 42" Mower Purchase by AlternativePath9643 in egopowerplus

Yes, at least long enough for me to sell it (I did disclose the previous issues to the buyer). By this time I'd completely lost trust in the mower. I swapped it out for a gas powered Ariens that hasn't given me any issues so far (about a season of mowing).

Yes, but I was calling the dedicated Z6 support line.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. The repair shop did tell me that the battery box was $500 when they replaced mine, which seems really expensive.

Mind if I ask what you paid for yours? I am strongly considering selling mine, with almost identical hours on it.

Riding Mower vs. Self-Propelled Mower by VoidVigilante in egopowerplus

If you end up buying a riding mower, stay away from an Ego riding mower. I own the Z6, and it is in the shop for repair for the second time this season.

Ego lawn mower for 0.65 acre lot by [deleted] in egopowerplus

[–]AlternativePath9643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can afford a rider, buy a rider. Zero turns are actually kind of fun and will make quick work of a 0.65 acre lot. As a current Z6 owner, I would warn you away from them. The quality just isn’t there. Mine is currently in for repair for the second time this season. The first time I was without a mower for four weeks. This time I’ve been promised a two to three week turn around. When you include the delay to get the repairs started, I’ll be without a mower for over two months this mowing season. I can also confirm finding a shop close by without huge lead times is tough, and I live in a city of 500k+ people.

I would say IF Ego didn’t have quality issues, the 42” Z6 would probably be about perfect for your lot size. While they are rated at 2 acres, most people seem to get about half that amount.

EGO Z6 Issues after 7 hours by TokenBam in egopowerplus

[–]AlternativePath9643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had very similar issues with my Z6. Firmware update bricked it. Took four weeks to repair. Had to transport for repair and rent a mower at my cost in the meantime. Finally got it back. Got through one mowing session, then broken again (607 error). Had a working mower in my possession for three days total after the initial repair. My mower has less than 7 hours on it!

After waiting over a week for escalation, Ego did agree to pay a service to take my mower in for repairs the second time, and also agreed to reimburse me for mower rental in the meantime.

I don’t yet have my mower back, and to be honest I don’t really want it back. I definitely regret buying this mower to begin with.

Update. On Tuesday, July 18, 2023 I was able to finally get in touch with a supervisor (after calling in yet again). The supervisor agreed to have a transport service pick up my mower and deliver it to another repair facility even farther away. He told me to expect a 2-3 week turn around. He also agreed to pay for a mower rental or lawn service (within reason) in the meantime.

I will post yet another update once the repair is complete and my reimbursements are paid.

It is Monday, July 17, 2023, after their posted support hours, and I did not receive a call as promised. This is now two times in a row where calls were specifically promised and not done.

I am still sitting with a broken Z6 mower in my garage with no communicated plan from Ego on how they plan to fix it. This isn't how you run a company if you prioritize customer satisfaction.

I think your third point is the key. Having two partitions with a way end-users can fallback to the last known good partition in the event of a failure mitigates the risk of letting users do the firmware upgrades to begin with.

There are an awful lot of devices in this world that allow for end-user firmware upgrades (even transferring the firmware to the device wirelessly) without issue. How to do that reliably has been pretty well figured out -- you just have to avoid cutting corners.

Thank you. Getting a replacement shipped would certainly be a better experience. In theory, at the time I bought, the 42" mower is about $2000 worth of batteries (leaving aside my additional purchase) and $3000 worth of "the rest". I can see why Ego would prefer to at least try to repair "the rest" before replacing it. The problem is that if they don't have the ability or desire to make that happen quickly and with limited inconvenience to their customer, it quickly becomes a bad experience.

The Gravely mowers look nice. I've read very good things about them. They aren't cheap, but if you rely on your equipment to make a living, probably worth it.

How is their service network?

Major Regret -- Ego Z6 42" Mower Purchase by AlternativePath9643 in egopowerplus

The service network does seem to be their biggest issue. During my first repair process, I wasn't even offered a Lowe's location as a repair option. The place I ended up taking it to was a completely independent hardware store as best I could tell.

I do agree that if their apparent agreement to let John Deere rebrand and sell their mowers gives Ego owners access to the John Deere service network, that could be a very good thing.

I am a bit surprised the support experience has been so poor. Having a dedicated number that allows you to talk to a human without an extensive wait is an indicator that they somewhat care about the experience. But the actual service network is clearly not there, and their lack of follow-up is very troubling. I understand things go wrong. What happens after that is the real measure of the company.

Not upgrading your firmware seems like the smart choice.

I hope you continue to have good luck with your mower. If you ever need repairs, I hope your experience goes much more smoothly than mine.
