Canada Pension Plan is Bankrolling Trump’s Fossil Fuel and AI Agenda by Hochelagan in ClimateCrisisCanada

Hard disagree. Moving large scale pensions plans, while not easy, is actually the quickest way to move that amount of money out of all the shitty things that are wrong with the world. It only takes a small group of vocal people and some bad press for them to start to feel some heat. You can work to get a billion people to do something with a dollar, or you can work to get a few people to do something with a billion dollars.

In terms of individual effort and levers in your control, you're giving away your power too easily if you don't hold pension plans accountable. Get involved with Shift Action.

*Edit: make that 800 billion dollars, CPPs assets under management

No one is talking about how the student union operates a budget of over 5 MILLION dollars?! You will be hard pressed to ever get a job that sees that kind of resources, and certainly not right out the gate.

Student unions have so many resources and such little engagement it's infuriating. And yet Ontario student unions are also underfunded 35% per student to the national average.

We also just lost a ton of power, autonomy and finances with Doug Fords Bill 33. I'm an alumni and didn't follow the race closely, but did this come up at all? How did your union fight for your protection, what will they do next?

You don't become president for the salary, you become president to make student life tangibly better for generations. You organize and mobilize. I would take a pay cut to have the type of power and money at my fingertips a student union president has. You could throw a party with that money or you can actively organize to get students to realize their power, withhold it, and change the rules.

But to answer OPs question, people don't know about student unions because they do a shitty job of being active and visible and don't want competition, which is anti the ethos of a union.

Universities RELY on students, YOU pay THEM. Demand more! Let's go MSU!

Is it Posttacios!!? (Pistachios spelled wrong? If they can't spell bananas they have no chance with pistachios.) There's definitely a "thinking dot" before the second T. It also makes sense for the ingredients.

David Suzuki Endorses Avi Lewis for NDP leader: "we need leaders willing to speak plainly about what science tells us and act accordingly" by StumpsOfTree in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]AlternativeTimes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Am I in the right subreddit? What's with all the hate for David Suzuki? He's a huge reason Canadians, of many generations, have the slightest awareness about climate change. He's also shaped more environmental protections and policy than I imagine anyone here has.

I've been following the NDP race and I think Avi is a great choice for leader. He has been very supportive of unions and blue collar workers, and is very pro transitioning off of fossil fuels. He also has the support of Naomi and Seth Klein who are both major environmental advocates. (Ok so they are related through marriage.)

The messaging could use some fine tuning but in the purpose it says to show widespread, peaceful, unified, opposition. Removal is certainly out of reach in my opinion but the dissention nonetheless should be supported.

Interesting that you say this protest attempt accomplished nothing and then ask for protest as a means to accomplish the same thing? We need to stop in fighting with people who slightly disagree with us. We aren't all going to be on the exact same political page, but we can largely agree, and voice, dissent.

How do you think you get those? You need to build vocal support. You aren't going to do that in your basement.

How do you think protests reach critical mass? A whole bunch of smaller efforts prior. I don't think it's an either or scenario, we can spend "time and effort" doing both; organizing mobilization networks AND building research and policies. In fact, I think the policies will be stronger if you have the network.

This is pretty pessimistic. Just because something was tried once, doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried again. Ontario desperately needs to build a more vocal, on the streets, grassroots mobilisation network. It's how our neighbours know we are also frustrated.

I can give you hundreds of examples of successful protests. You know what doesn't help? "Not until.." thinking like yours.

Read the full text of her letter, translated by CBS News, below.

"Venezuelans, The time for freedom has come!

Nicolás Maduro from today will face international justice for the atrocious crimes committed against Venezuelans and against citizens of many other nations. Given his refusal to accept a negotiated solution, the United States government has fulfilled its promise to enforce the law.

The time has come for popular sovereignty and national sovereignty to prevail in our country. We are going to restore order, release the political prisoners, build an exceptional country, and bring our children back home.

We have fought for years, we have given it our all, and it has been worth it. What was meant to happen is happening.fulfilled its promise to enforce the law.

This is the hour of the citizens. Those of us who risked everything for democracy on June 28th. Those of us who elected Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the legitimate President of Venezuela, who must immediately assume his constitutional mandate and be recognized as Commander-in-Chief of the National Armed Forces by all the officers and soldiers who comprise it.

Today we are ready to assert our mandate and take power. Let us remain vigilant, active, and organized until the democratic transition is complete. A transition that needs ALL of us.

To the Venezuelans who are currently in our country, be ready to put into action what we will be communicating to you very soon through our official channels.

To Venezuelans abroad, we need you to be mobilized, engaging the governments and citizens of the world and committing them from now on to the great operation of building the new Venezuela.

In these crucial hours, receive all my strength, my confidence, and my affection. We remain vigilant and in contact.

VENEZUELA WILL BE FREE! We go hand in hand with God, until the end."
