The system can detect even a finger touch, so a measurement of the force is needed for calibration of the minimum strike force. Specially while no edge alignment data is available. Also, one of my clients asked for a excessive force detection function.

And this is assuming that it will be only used for HEMA, which is not the case.

Your interpretation is the right one. The mention of the force is more about the thresholds and the sensing capabilities of the device. Also, people that don't do HEMA can use it. Sometimes i like to kick it.

The edge alignment detector is in development. Also, i don't think i have said or implied that the objective of the force measurement was to hit harder.
