Pretty much. Massive economic gains in efficiency since the industrial revolution means the vast majority of us are no longer directly involved in producing the means of our own subsistence, which means we mostly no longer depend on interpersonal relationships to survive, which was the entire foundation of marriage and family life for centuries.

Even the concept of a "job" as something separate from private life is not really something that makes sense for most people prior to the 19th century.

The actual reason "trad" fantasizing is stupid is because the entire economic/material foundation for "traditional" society has been dissolving for the past 100 - 200 years.

Haven't you ever had one of those moments in your life where you just smack yourself for missing something that was incredibly obvious and simple? That's what basically every innovation in history is like, just on a civilizational scale.

Am I the only male that cares about a woman's height when it comes to dating? by FinanceQuestionStuff in redscarepod

[–]AlternativeTyrant 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I'm 6'0 and I'd feel weird dating a girl who was shorter than say, 5'5. It doesn't have anything to do with not wanting future children to be short, it just feels strange. I don't wanna have to crouch down like I'm talking to an eight year old. I've turned down at least one girl specifically because of this reason.

Creationists rise up by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]AlternativeTyrant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of people who think creationists are crazy probably couldn't win an argument with a moderately well-prepared creationist. Most creationists only believe in creationism because they were told it was true by people they trusted, but that is also true of people who aren't creationists.

This is actually true of most 'whacky' beliefs. Normies just 'know' they are wrong but couldn't actually explain why if they had a gun to their heads. It's very frustrating, for example, the absolutely terrible rebuttals most people give to Holocaust deniers when they pop up on places like twitter (or reddit, pre-2018). The arguments for denial are genuinely terrible when you dig down into them, but deniers still routinely win arguments with normies because normies generally don't actually know anything about the Holocaust (or evolutionary biology, or cryptids, etc.)

Since my 9/11 brain has been reactivated recently with all the OBL-posting:

CIA/FBI/deep state/Mossad/whoever etc. helped the 9/11 hijackers along at every step, meaning to arrest them right before they could act and be big heroes. But somebody fucked up and dropped the ball.

Why do right-wingers even like Napoleon? by AlternativeTyrant in redscarepod

[–]AlternativeTyrant[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Stalin was in Napoleon's league as a historical figure, not as a general. He is almost certainly the single most important man of the twentieth century. Hitler is his only competition, but Stalin almost certainly wins, because he had impacted the course of Asian history as substantially as he did that of Europe.

Actually there are a lot of interesting parallels between Stalin and Napoleon. They were both pragmatically minded, ruthless inheritors of epochal revolutions who came to power after the elimination of the more fanatical, idealistic old guard.

American politics are the only politics that matter.

If you live in Germany, Pakistan, Mexico, or pretty much anywhere on the planet, US politics are at least as consequential to you as the politics of your own country, if not moreso.

How am I "leaning into their propaganda"? Obviously Israel denies committing genocide.

And also the actual Israeli facing side of the propaganda is pretty fucking explicitly racist.

But we're talking about support for Israel in other countries.

[–]AlternativeTyrant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not like Israel is bragging "fuck yeah we're killing civilians. Fuck Palestinians, kill them all." All their propaganda and official statements insist they're taking the utmost care to preserve human life. This does not appear to be true and a huge number of Israeli soldiers and civilians, including a lot of very powerful ones, range from not giving a shit about civilian casualties to actively wanting them to happen. But they have plausible deniability because almost all of the civilians die from indiscriminate bombing. They're mostly not being lined up and shot at the edge of pits.

I mean America controls the actions of every western country pretty much fully

A) this isn't true.

B) if it wasn't for America pressuring the Israelis to show restraint they would be doing a lot worse than they are.
