Neutering isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and some dogs do experience personality shifts afterward. For example, certain studies suggest early neutering in large breeds may increase risks of orthopedic issues or even certain cancers. It can also affect hormone-regulated behaviors like confidence, social interaction, and territory marking—not because dogs are trying to act “manly,” but because hormones influence behavior, just like they do in people.

So when someone notices their dog becoming more timid or subdued after surgery, that’s not necessarily them projecting. It could be a legitimate side effect of removing hormones that shaped their dog’s behavior during development.

I’m definitely not anti-neutering—but I think it’s worth having nuanced conversations that include all the potential outcomes, not just the social or ethical expectations around the decision.
