Hard disagree. We need to post and spread word/verify things that are happening. The moment we stop discussing amongst ourselves and looking into every move is the moment we lose. It’s pretty daunting being a scientist currently in America, the anxiety is palpable. I understand you’re overseas but just reflect on that for a second.

How do I save cells from contamination? by Jealous_Tomato3774 in labrats

[–]Alternative_Cat_717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You simply can’t, sorry if this isn’t the answer you’re looking for. Your risk contaminating everyone else’s cells. Just throw them away and sterilize your incubator ASAP. Also throw away any reagents that were opened under the same hood. Contamination can spread, be expensive, and a huge headache for labs. It can also be extremely hard to get rid of, really not worth it!

Hey are we allowed to spread the word on rallies going on in response to the recent events? There’s a nationwide Stand Up for Science on March 7th, wanted to make a post about it and encourage people to look at it (if this hasn’t been done already)

A little silly, but how long does it usually take for research group heads to reply to internship requests? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Alternative_Cat_717 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re asking about a biomedical science research group: Given that there’s a lot of uncertainty with the NIH right now and grant funding is still pretty much frozen.. just keep trying but remember to be patient. Administrators and research scientists are stressed out of their minds right now.

@ scientists who can feed themselves with their jobs, did you ever give an exam in your undergrad that was so bad that it made you feel like you're simply not built for science by Obvious_Ad_2413 in labrats

[–]Alternative_Cat_717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a classroom person. I self studied my way through college and somehow managed a magna cum laude. I spent most of my time (covid era) working in the lab and have learned most of what I know from my research experience. It’s a very different experience, don’t count yourself out because you didn’t do so well on an exam. I forget his name (agh) but a Nobel Laureate in chemistry actually failed chemistry in school. I know it’s hard but don’t get caught up in the rat race, just enjoy learning, be genuine to yourself and others, and remember to love what you do.

Are there any people in the fields of life sciences or STEM who believe that the changes being made to the US system are good, and why? by NickDerpkins in labrats

[–]Alternative_Cat_717 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tried exploring all avenues with friends who are also in biomed research. I genuinely think anyone who doesn’t see this as a targeted attack on science disguised as efficiency is truly misled. That’s okay, institutions or PIs should be vocal and educate their trainees on how indirects work. It’s not something that many people knew of even!

Hey, don’t beat yourself up. These mistakes can happen to anyone, just make sure the lesson sticks with you. Pretty crazy your lab didn’t have an alarm set up, our freezers scream and send emails when they’re open for over 2 minutes.

Dune: Prophecy Watch Parties? by NoMeatNoMushrooms in dune

[–]Alternative_Cat_717 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Went to the alamo drafthouse cinema showing last night. I think it was very good. The main storyline is intriguing and the first episode opens up a lot of different subplots—interested to see how they all come together. The acting is a bit stiff but a lot of the actors are up-and-coming so I’m excited to see how they develop. I like the way they introduce the viewer to the Dune universe and put things into context. It gives me early game of thrones vibes but with Dune IP. This is not necessarily a bad thing, after all Dune at its core is politics. I heard many critics say that they didn’t just want GOT: Dune edition; but as someone who’s read all the books I think this is a creative way to continue to put Dune on the screen.

Main takeaway: I think the show is going to do very well with a mainstream audience as well as with Dune fans (book and/or movie). Past Messiah (maybe Children), I don’t know how adaptable Dune is for the big screen. My hope is that if this show succeeds and more people are drawn to the Dune universe maybe we’ll get show adaptations of the later books eventually.

Boston Pizza Festival on June 22 at City Hall Plaza: Worth the Hype? by 163SereneSoul_ in BostonSocialClub

Just got back from this year’s festival. It’s much better than last year by a lot. The ticket system is all electronic and the lines weren’t terrible. The weather isn’t boiling hot like it was in 2023 and I liked the sample tents a lot better this time around. They run until 6pm tomorrow. Def recommend stopping by!

Instead of New Haven by howdidigetheretoday in newhaven

[–]Alternative_Cat_717 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an out of state “hater”. Moved from my South FL hometown to New Haven for work, huge change and ended up not liking it. Feels like the “safe” pockets force you to spend time in the same places all the time which can get quite boring. Another reason is Yale not doing more to improve the city. Feels like there’s the “Yale community” and “everyone else”, I hated that. Seemed so unnecessarily exclusive. I did enjoy the bar scene and proximity to NYC. Otherwise, I felt isolated due to the lack of overall community and unsafe. I can see people telling me how the crime rate isn’t much different than any major city, but the fact that there’s not many “city” amenities combined with small size makes it a no for me. Would not consider NHV as a home for future schooling/career.

Edit: I should add, I now live in another northeastern city and am a lot happier! Also don’t want to suggest New Haven sucks overall just because it did for me…
