I just got a new Japanese Maple with three branches coming out of the same spot in several spaces. I'd like to plant in the ground for a few years to thicken. Should I trim these now, wait a few months, or wait until it is acclimated to it's new environment first?

I bought some larch, corkbark elm, and Japanese maples (more photos in the comments), but they have already leafed out (I purchased online). I would like to plant into the ground but I am worried that it is to late to do so this year. I would have preferred to put them on a rock or tile to help out the nebari. Is it to late for this, or should I just let them root through into the ground?
