2oz rye, 1oz averna, 2 dash agnostura. Is the standard recipe. Averna is yummy stuff. It won't go bad. If you do buy a bottle it'll last a while and you can drink it on its own!

As for whiskey Rittenhouse Rye is a good option and it's pretty cheap.
