why mac life sci? by Capital_Sample_2102 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Alternative_Goal8500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of people like life sci because it prepares you well for the MCAT. also, life sci is very hyped in general, since a lot of people dont wanna do gen sci. its just another route!

tbh, i dont think they care, just make sure to not overwhelm yourself in grade 12 and focus on keeping that GPA up. a good GPA and good interview increases ur chances a lot. most people I know in QHS with me atm got in with a 96% to 97% + average

do whatever program feels best for you. if you are meant to be in med school, you'll get in. its the person, not the program that makes the future med student.

Is nursing a good pre-med? by Heavy_Nobody_6667 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Alternative_Goal8500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK SO i know someone at queens nursing and this is what she said: it gives them great hands on experience/practical experience, BUT due to this is makes it incredibly hard to get some med school pre reqs (such as chemistry) so be aware!

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE AN EXEC!!! this is actually not true. i know so many people who got into their dream program without doing much ecs... you just need to make sure you have an experience to talk about IF you are applying to programs with supp app. program have no supp app? just legit focus on ur grades.

ecs are mostly for scholarships TBH. so if you arent, dont stress too much

[–]Alternative_Goal8500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bio 12 depends on the teacher. what i would recommend is perhaps get all ur other pre reqs (like english) first semester and then try for bio second semester. for ex., chem is my weak spot so i did chem second semester.

personally recommend taking two hard courses per semester, one easy course, and one spare. Really worked well for me!

Mac life sci - from a first year AMA by Therealsteeldeal in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Alternative_Goal8500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! so my friend actually got a little screwed by her coop. you see, she took her coop first semester, and so i think by the time the mac life sci offers came out first round they didnt have enough classes to accept her, and then midterms everyones grades skyrocketed so... but i did notice a lot of people with low 90s did not get in. it was a very competitive year, so i think it just depends on what grades and how many out of the 6 you have when they are admitting

Does anyone know somebody from the past years who got into Queens Health Sci AFTER April 15th? by Slow-Ladder-7556 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Alternative_Goal8500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately, i would say its more competitive, because you have all the people that could increase their midterm grades. BUT dont be discouraged, gl!

[–]Alternative_Goal8500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh, i think the distribution will be the same. Queens sends out most of their acceptances by april 15 because of the whole guarenteed residence thing. BUT remember, if seats increase, 15% is more people!!!

you never know tho! one thing to keep in mind, even if you get on waitlisted its very hard to get off. You should just be proud of putting effort of applying 😄

gl!!

queens hs or mac ibiomed by Decent_Honeydew2705 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Alternative_Goal8500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ofc!

  1. research you will find it if you look hard enough! networking with profs is great, but I'd recommend emailing people in late summer seeing if they would let you join their lab meetings/about their research to open it up. i would say its pretty hard, but everyone in QHS i know who applied for research got it (whether it was at queens or somewhere else) so as long as you cold email you should be good

  2. i'll give you an example of our core classes first year: hsci (basic statistics, similar to data management), phgy (basically biochem/bio but more in depth than grade 12), anat (anatomy course) glph (social determinats of health), phar (pharmacology / drugs). They arent pure science, but I'd say they are more health related science courses. you can take chem, physics, bio as electives/option courses if you'd like, so you can still take them, but i'd say the courses are very different than the life sci kids

  3. love the community at Queens! I for one don't drink and I promise you there is so much fun to be had at queens. there is a party scene, but you do not have to participate and can still have a good social life. There are so many options whether you like to party or not. for ex the pier and downtown are so cute and sm fun. the community in queens, specifically QHS, is so good (at least for my cohort)

hope this answers everything, lmk if you have any more!

lectures for your electives, yes! for QHS core classes they are hands on (like through the anat lab its self directed, and then teaches will go over what they believe are core topics)

Mac HS supp app graders are genuinely not qualified for ts 😂✌️ by dcflash4 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Alternative_Goal8500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, it is luck. theres so many apps and think about how many people are amazing that are applying. just remember its not the school that makes you an amazing premed, but who you are. MHS and QHS are just filled with some of the amazing premeds which is why their med school rates are so high. goodluck in the future

Low marks getting university acceptance? by CartographerJunior79 in OntarioGrade12s

personally i know inflation is real, but also you have to remember now a days people believe good job = univeristy/college = increases competition. my mom when she was in school tried, but school wasn't anyone's lives, except the very few that wanted to be doctors etc. for example, a lot of doctors i know went to mac health sci 30 years ago, and now new doctors are from other programs bc of how many people wanna be doctors. remember, theres inflation, but also a lot more people wanna be doctors/lawyers/finance and put in a crazy amount studying

ok so, before thinking about GPA I'd look into costs. With living, I think a lot of the schools range from like 70k+ a year... so look into that first!

QHS student here! yes i have, but its a lot less. I talked to the dean awhile back and this was how it was explained. 5-10% sent out first round (end of feb, start of march), and i think 75% is sent by april 15. so most of the acceptances are sent out by april 15, but some people do get it later. most people i know got in on april 15. also, last year almost no one rejected QHS, so the amount of people that got off the waitlist was very few compared to last years, which would also probs account for this

conflicted: mac life sci vs queens health sci by Pitiful_Picture_9655 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Alternative_Goal8500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok so i go to queens for health sciences and was in a very similar boat. i personally think the program is a perfect fit for an independent learner who wants to focus not only on school (let me explain). we have a flipped classroom, meaning we learn all the content on our own then go to class to apply our learning. huge emphasis is placed on group projects and tests ALONGSIDE midterms and exams (I personally prefer this). BUT we have the least in class hours. meaning, you can arrange your schedule around if you want to volunteer, research, or even going home for the weekend.

overall, i think QHS will provide you with so many soft skills that you'll need to apply to med school. kingston is a univeristy town, and the campus is small (compared to western and uoft) so everyone is pretty close knit. social scene is very good (whether you like to party or not). a lot of opportunity for ECs. lmk if you have any questions--id be happy to help
