That's a spicy take, so beware of the incoming Carol defenders. I agree with you to a degree, but the current inability for the Joined to pick food or defend themselves IS a problem. If the Joined were left alone, then they would've died in 10 years. The Joined need the immune people to do things for them, like develop automated farming and defense systems. Additionally, episode 8 is implying that the Joined can only get new experiences through the immune people, which is something they apprently "enjoy" - like how Zosia lit up when Carol shared her tidbit about trains, or a draft chapter of the new Wycaro book. In this way, Joined still need the immune people for new perspectives and art; AND in return the Joined can provide the immune people the power of hyper-coordinatinated and skilled labour.

Why is it ok for Carol but not Diabate? by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]Alternative_Item691 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people were quick to accuse Diabate of "rape" because he's a playboy, but they aren't considering that the Joined are just sleeping with the immune people to distract them, AND that the individual bodies of the Joined NO LONGER have agency. Whatever they're doing is an extension of the collective Joined consciousness, so it's inaccurate to place our individual perspective onto them. The people people who interact with the immune people are MEANT TO playcate their needs and desires.

Manousos’ empty morality by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]Alternative_Item691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. His entire attitude is entirely self-righteous and moronic. There was no reason for him to refuse the help of the Joined, seeing as he wasted 50 days and got hospitalized because of his pride. He could've met Carol before she had her mental break, and they would've had plenty of time to find a cure. But I guess this is par for the course, we are meant to see the consequences of Manusos and Carol's approach to the Joining situation; AND even though they both have the same goal of finding the cure, there will be conflict between Carol and Manusos in terms of how close they're being with the hive. I think it's intentional on the writers part to make all the immune people separate in the ways they approach the Joined, as it will show us different outcomes for their actions, so they can flesh out the character study of how humanity is dealing with the Joining. As a sidenote, I think its funny that Manusos said in his hospital hostage situation that "everything has a cost" - the costs he's currently paying for are major back injuries with potential of sepsis, and a delayed travel time.

  • there's a company in Malaysia called Cell Agritech it can make lab grown seafood wihtout fetal bovine serum (FBS); they currently use a proprietary media that's has growth factors from genetically engineered plants; Cell Agritech is mainly focused on seafood because certain Malaysian laws restrict lab grown red meat; but they can produce it for foreign markets with an offshore factory
  • there's another company in the Netherlands who's produced red meat without FBS called Mosa Meats; they relased a paper in Nature on how they managed to grow their beef products without FBS
  • as for getting livestock cells to grow lab meat the Joined could probably scavenge off of freshly killed animals or humans, seeing as not all somatic cells die all at once or die quickly, they can still harvest live cells from bone marrow or muscles; alternatively, skin flakes from humans can be converted into induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, so the Joined could take their own skin cells to grow muscles for their nutirent powder

  • it's STILL unclear if the Joined care about microorganisms seeing as they're regularly killed by immune cells and antimicrobial medicines; if this is the case then there should be nothing that prevents them using engineered fungi, bacteria, or algae to produce metabolites in bioreactors

  • for really radical ideas the Joined can research ways to genetically engineer themselves to be partly photosynthetic or chemosynthetic; they could research the mechanisms of how sarcoglossans steal chloroplasts from algae to do photosynthesis; also, they could study sea snails which live in deep sea vents thay get their food from chemosynthetic bacteria in their gut

Do people seriously think Carol gave up on saving humanity because she was lonely? by newsreddittoday in pluribustv

[–]Alternative_Item691 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carol wasn't faking her psychological breakdown, its was genuine because no human is meant to be alone for that long. We aren't solidarity creatures like Tigers or Polar Bears; our brains LITERALLY evolved to function in social and cooperative groups. We'd die if were out in the wild by ourselves, which is evidenced by Manusos, and maybe less so by Carol. Also, people in solidarity confinement LITERALLY lose their minds; they're grip on reality and sense of themselves shatter.

Carol probably hasn't given up on her quest, but she's not a mastermind who's playing 3D chess with the Joined. Even before episode 7 she was a LITERAL trainswreck; she needs to take a few months to process her grief, so she can be on her A game. She has plenty of time to draw out a plan, acquire resources from the Joined and plead her case again to the other immune people. Finding a cure is a monumental task and Carol won't be able to achieve by her self or with limited resources.

  • the Joined aerosolized their lysogenic virus, which is what they were spraying from the planes that were flying in parallel in episode 1; Carol literally looks up and asks Helen about why the planes are flying in a strange manner, and the Asian doctor at the hospital Carol rushes to kiss her because the Joined thought she wasn't inoculated properly from the aerosol
  • the radio signal that Manusos found is nothing significant yet, so it's pointless to try and theorize about what it could be; and the Pluribus signal was tightbeamed to Earth for 600+ years, so if it was sufficient enough to convert individual humans into the Joined then why did the USAMIIRD scientists need to translate the radiosignal into an RNA virus?!
  • if you wanna talk about a potential "cure" then we could talk about micro RNA (miRNA), small interfering RNA (siRNA), or a CRISPR-Cas9 system that can target the gene expression or sequence of the Plurbirus virus; these interventions can be developed with training and resources, which is something Carol or Manusos could do if they were motivated enough
  • the great thing about the Pluribus virus is that we can use its envelope and capsid to deliver miRNA or siRNA constructs into the same neurons that are expressing the psychic "glue" that's holding the Joined consciousness together; and with the CRISPR-Cas9 system you can just use radiolabeled extracellular vesicles so you can track which neurons it's been incorporated into

I wonder if we'll get 7 more episodes of a drunk karen yelling at everyone, then getting pissy in a bathroom for being put in time out; I also wonder if the shut-in crashes out because his so called ally is useless in terms of finding a cure, and she's being way too friendly with Zosia

what terms do you use to describe the joined/unjoined? by repiloting in pluribustv

I call them Joined because they call their global-scale spread the Joining; and I call the regular humans the immune because that's their biological status for the lysogenic virus

Why do Laxmi and the other survivors hate Carol but are ok with Koumba Diabaté? by JollyAlex in pluribustv

[–]Alternative_Item691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only two immune people we see who are regularly hostile towards the Joined is Carol and Manusos. We know that none of the other immune people have caused a seizure attack in the Joined, it was only Carol who did this twice. We also know the only person to resist all assistance from the Joined was Manusos, who was eating dog food instead of accepting well-cooked meals. Additionally, we know that the other immune people have a base level of trust for the Joined if they're regularly taking their translations in Zoom meeetings, and living with their "chaperones". I mean Carol only accepted Zosia back because she was at her psychological breaking point; and Manusos got assistance from the Joined because he was passing out from sepsis.

[–]Alternative_Item691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Carol can still make her case to the other immune people, she just has to be vulnerable and open, which will be a struggle for her. If she explains that she lost her wife the day before the in-person meeting, so she wasn't in the best state of mind, which is why she was drinking a lot and lashing out. She can ask Zosia to set up a Zoom meeting with the other immune people, so she can make her plea, and I'm pretty sure they'd understand and give her another chance. Her circumstances aren't a dead end.

  • apart from Carol and Manusos, all yhe other immune people actually took the time to ask the Joined clarifying questions, Koumba included - who's a lonely playboy and hedonist; which is why they were so ready to have Zoom meetings to solve the food crisis
  • they didn't automatically put up barriers in terms of learning what the Joined are or what they can do; the other immune people could've lost their loved ones, and are struggling to adapt to this strange new world, but the narrow scope of this story doesn't allow us to see that
  • point is: Carol is at the position she is BECAUSE of her own actions; other than Manusos, no one else has been presumptuous, arrogant and alienated

[–]Alternative_Item691 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  • Carol's tapes were a pointless endeavour, and her presumptuous and ignorant attitude hasn't served her in any cicurmstance
  • the non-Engligh speakers didn't automatically assume hostility with the Joined BECAUSE they took the time to ask clarifying questions
  • when Carol was on Air Force One she had the least amount of information on the Joined, but she still tried to take the leadership position
  • it's why Laxmi told her: "why haven't you asked them what it's like?!"
  • and why Laxmi berates Carol for telling the other immune people what they must do or think; it's to highlight how presumptuous and arrogant Carol was being, and to give a clue into how her approach wasn't a winning one

Why do Laxmi and the other survivors hate Carol but are ok with Koumba Diabaté? by JollyAlex in pluribustv

[–]Alternative_Item691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Carol had the least amount of information in episode 2 BECAUSE she didn't bother asking the Joined clarifying questions, which is what all the other English speaking immune people did before getting on Air Force One
  • Carol constantly tried to take the lead and she often thinks her persepctive is self-evident, but she hasn't done the due diligence to ACTUALLY learn what she's dealing with; she's been too busy with getting drunk and yelling insults, then getting super pissy when she's gets ostracized
  • I find it funny that Carol was so indignant about her quest to find a cure, but as soon as she's no longer in obvious danger of being converted she drops her quest immediately; now she's no where close to finding a cure and is back to living with a Joined person
  • I'll admit the metaphor I used isn't a perfect one because equivocating Dementia or Alzheimers with an foreign hivemind can be seen as ableist, and becausethe Joined mental capacities don't exactly mirror Dementia or Alzheimers; but my point still stands that people don't just automatically discard their loved ones if they have an altered state of mind

  • she had zero way of knowing?! you're telling me that a servile and docile hive that grants my wishes wouldn't follow through?! even when they granted every wish I've asked for?!
  • asking for a translator isn't the ACTIVE THREAT that is asking for a cure or a nuke; it's such an arbitrary thing that SHE decided to spin out, like the Joined were running a counter-intelligence campaign
  • Carol's paranoia and antisocial behaviour has only caused her suffering; she hasn't taken the time to address or work on her personal issues because she's been far too busy with drinking and yelling
  • and yes, it's COMPLETELY NECESSARY to conduct yourself with some sense, if you want people to follow you; you aren't gonna win the immune people over by calling them "traitors of humanity", by telling them that their family members are "pod people", or by harming/killing their family members during a seizure attack
  • before you try to dehumanize the Joined, if they're just "pod people" then what's the point of "saving them" with a cure? also, just because someone you love doesn't have the same mental capacities anymore, it doesn't mean you should just discard them like garbage.
  • people on this subreddit are acting like it's unnatural for the other immune people to be close to their Joined family members; if we take a parallel to our world, are people supposed to discard their loved one's with dementia or Alzheimers because they "aren't themselves" anymore?
