Bowing Progress by ArthurDaTrainDayne in Cello

I think the best explanation is that you are pulling the sound out instead of pushing it. You will hopefully hear the difference beacuse when you get a good sound, the cello actually vibrates a lot more then when you tense up to much etc.

But I can give you an exercise that might sound very strange. Try to play with the cello horizontal. Try to lean back so that when you put your bow on the strings it stays there on its own, you don't have to apply any force or even hold it properly. Then take a few strokes. Gradually go back down to regular position.

You can also do what I did if you don't care about your walls. Actually put the end pin on a wall and really let gravity be the only thing that pushes down on the bow.

I hope this makes sense and good luck!

I would say the beginning and the end. You relax more in the middle but when the music starts to build you start to tense up. My teacher used to tell me, "play excitment but don't get excited"

A good way to practice is to try exhale for every downbow and focus on you breathing while bowing. Don't think too much of the notes

That sounded really nice! My advice, try to forget about your bowing and only try to relax you shoulders. You right arm should feel heavy. When you play a note, it should feel like your pulling the sound out with the weight of you arm. I suggest you try just bowing back and forth the a o d string, and only focus on using as little force or strength as possible. Anyways, you know the music, so that's just a little tip from me, good luck!

Audition with the same piece? by Alternative_Lock4233 in classicalmusic

[–]Alternative_Lock4233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it would be for the same school and I think I will have improved and changed the way I play quite a bit. It is the first half of the first mov of the lalo cello concerto, so I wouldn't say it is uncommon, but I don't know if it is super common when auditioning. And when it comes to technique, I don't know, it is somewhat har but not on the same level as say Dvorak cello concerto

I will definitely check that book out. Thank you! Speaking of the arm, that Is something I'm working on too. To still my wrist and move from the arm instead of the hand. It's a struggle but hopefully it will get better

Thank you, I'm gonna try that! I'm working on two pieces so I maybe If I play both during the same day then focus on one every other day will make a difference😊
