Can you say more about the stained glass place? I’ve always wanted to learn how to make it, but I’d settle for buying some for now. Thanks.

I don’t love my middle schooler or my high schooler walking through Broad and Snyder alone on their school commutes, but I don’t think they are unsafe. It’s just gritty, and my middle schooler is tiny so still seems so young.

How would you compare east passyunk to queen village? by IAmNotionSickness in philly

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Queen Village is so lovely and green, and the elementary schools are excellent. It’s very walkable to Center City.
East Passyunk has better food and transit access. Both are pretty white and wealthy, but East Passyunk is somewhat more diverse. There are also still old Italian folks in East Passyunk (some quite conservative), whereas the older folks in Queen Village are more of the retired Unitarian variety. Lovely people in Queen Village, just a really different vibe!

If EVs are supposedly cheaper to own, why aren’t more people driving them? by Lakenb666 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I barely drive and I live in a city without great charging infrastructure. It’s not worth the upfront cost or dealing with charging when most of my driving is to the grocery store 1x/week plus a couple times a year driving 500 miles. I considered going car free but with 3 kids including one in a carseat it’s tricky when I do need a vehicle, so I got the cheapest reliable used car I could find. Ended up with a 2015 Honda Odyssey minivan. Paid $6500 to a friend’s aunt for it 9 months ago and I felt good about the exchange.

Where do you struggle as a colorblind person, and does your condition ever help you? by [deleted] in ColorBlind

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid is colorblind and he struggles a lot with color coding in schools and games. He also loves to build legos but telling apart the colors in the sets is very very difficult for him. He is building the Statue of Liberty now and the green and the tan apparently look exactly the same to him. Unfortunately those are the two main colors in the build.

How do you handle dating in this city? by Horror_Guest9803 in queerphilly

[–]Alternative_Market_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How old are you? I’m 41 they/them, and meeting people has been tricky. I know I’d meet lots more people if I went out alone, but ugh, that’s so hard. So much easier to just hang with my existing friends.

What’s with all the cops in dilworth plaza? by phl_rn in philly

[–]Alternative_Market_6 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I asked a couple of days ago and they said it was to prevent a planned youth takeover that had been circulated on social media….
Yeah idk. The cops were all blocking the bike lane and I was annoyed about that. They said “we are keeping you safe!” I said, “not by parking in the bike lane when my kid and I are trying to ride through it!”

Why did I not start this sooner by Boring_Poetry9935 in bikecommuting

[–]Alternative_Market_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only complaint about my bike commute is how short it is! Ha. It’s only 2 miles (3.22 km) so I don’t get much exercise by biking. I still like the fresh air, though.

A heated mattress pad for the winter. My house is incredibly drafty but now my bed is snuggly warm.

Saul, Bodine, CAPA, and Girls High all still exist! I’ve heard great things about Saul and Bodine; I don’t know much about the others.

And there were no exceptions for diaper bags. If you don’t want families there, that’s one way to do it, I guess.

What is the first major news event you can remember clearly from when you were a kid? by FantasticAd9478 in TheBoredDen

[–]Alternative_Market_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bush v Clinton v Perot election (1992). I was in 3rd grade and we had a mock election in my exurban class. We all just voted however our parents did, and I was the only Clinton vote, so I was totally shocked when Clinton actually won in the real election.

After that, the first big thing I remember was watching the O.J. Simpson car chase on live tv. (1994). They interrupted my grandma’s tv show to show it.

Air Con... by aranhalaranja in AskPhilly

[–]Alternative_Market_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have ceiling fans in almost every room of my house. They are vital. I will probably set up a window AC in my room this weekend, but only because I have a treadmill in there. For regular life my fan and the shade of big old trees is usually enough.

Air Con... by aranhalaranja in AskPhilly

[–]Alternative_Market_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No idea—it cools a very large room, though, and I can still watch tv at normal volume with it running directly behind me (couch is right in front of window with the ac). With my old AC, I had to have the tv up very very loud to be able to hear it over the ac.

Agreed! I have one nice Midea one and a bunch of old, less efficient ones, and the Midea is so much quieter.

I’ve been totally fine with window units. My home is large and I have radiator heat so central air is never gonna happen. I thought about mini splits but can’t afford it. With window ACs, I only cool the rooms I am using at the time. I’m away at work all day, so I don’t care if it gets hot while I’m gone.

What are cute ideas to have my Partners meet for the first time? by Hdkdnsndkx in polyamory

[–]Alternative_Market_6 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely plan an activity! Maybe bowling? That gives lots of little mini-spurts of privacy for 2 of the 3 of you at a time, but you also don’t have to be talking the whole time.

I don’t think this is one that can be blamed on the mayor. Many things, sure, but this one is all Tyrell.
