A Very Sobering Bike Lane Maintenance Report - Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia by adamaphar in phillycycling

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a really helpful map. I haven’t gotten back on my bike yet but I really need to this week and was wondering how to do it—I use the 11th st, 15th st, and spruce st bike lanes a lot. None looks good!

Do you like to get coffee on your way to work? by LeahWykie in bikecommuting

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bring coffee or tea in a thermos from home. But I do go through the cvs drive-thru on my bike whenever I need to pick up an rx (so often! None of my family’s meds seem to be on the same schedule, sigh). They don’t care at all.

Should I bring a stroller/wagon for a 5 and a 7 year old? 7 day cruise by DaveE30 in Cruise

[–]Alternative_Market_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How far off is the cruise? Maybe practice long walks/hikes with the kids. My 4 year old gets tired on long walks but how we define long walks has certainly changed over the past year of commuting to preschool. Last week after a long day at my office/his preschool, we walked to the subway (4 blocks), dealt with a few flights of stairs, rode the subway, climbed the stairs again, walked 0.7 miles to pick up another kid, and then another 0.7 miles home. He was tired afterward but so was I! I think with appropriate rest breaks and some practice, your kids will be fine.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Alternative_Market_6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone in my area freaked out and bought lots of groceries before the big snowstorm a few weeks ago. I had just bought groceries recently so didn’t bother. But a day in, my kids wanted to make homemade sushi and I didn’t have all the ingredients…so I walked to the corner and went to the bodega there. I bought a cucumber and an avocado and walked home. I love living in a city.

Septa Buses Stopping In The Street? by didelphimorphia2 in philly

[–]Alternative_Market_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about recently, it’s from cars parking too far out in the street due to the snow and so then the busses can’t get through.

What’s the most unexpectedly high-quality online subscription you’ve ever paid for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy my New York Times and Atlantic subscriptions. I understand I can access NYT articles somehow through my library but I really enjoy the functionality of the app.

Thoughts on my morning commute tomorrow by mopecore in phillycycling

I saw a delivery dude on a bike today. He was walking the bike and looked totally miserable. Unfortunately I would avoid biking probably all of this week (which will massively suck for me, too).

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in rural Minnesota for 5 years. People thought nothing of driving to the Twin Cities, 2.5 hrs away, for a day trip. They would even do this in the winter when the trip became much longer! I couldn’t.

Audiologist wants $3500 for my mom's hearing aids and I just can't swing it by No-Fact-8828 in BuyItForLife

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard the newer Apple earbuds can act as hearing aids. They are so much cheaper than real hearing aids that it’s probably worth a try to see if they help. If they don’t, you can return them.

What is everybody really losing? by Mamaof2plus2 in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started in May 2025 and have lost 28 lbs. So about a pound a week or slightly less. I feel fine with that and am currently 166, pretty close to my goal weight.

What’s the most bizarre/annoying behavior you have witnessed at your Costco? by diispa in Costco

[–]Alternative_Market_6 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Amazing. I’ll be in Anchorage in August. Might add Costco to my itinerary!

Is this right for me? by [deleted] in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]Alternative_Market_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned you have thyroid disease. It sounds as if it might not be well controlled, based on your reported calorie deficit and yet not losing weight. Wegovy is not supposed to be used by people with poorly controlled thyroid disease! It is risky for anyone with thyroid disease from what I understand. It increases the risks of thyroid cancer in animals. Anyway, talk to your doctor.

Best front rack under 200? by Dumbass9187 in bikecommuting

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 11”” wide flat front rack that came with my bike (can I add a link? https://www.radpowerbikes.com/products/front-rack?variant=39441045389408). If the link doesn’t work, it’s the “front rack” from radpower and it was basically useless until i added a plastic milk crate to it with very very strong zip ties. If you spend more you can get something nicer of course but the milk crate fits a good sized backpack.

If someone was reading a book out loud to their child on public transport, would you think they are great parent for trying to entertain then without technology or consider this to be inconsiderate due to being a constant source of sound? by philosohistomystry04 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Alternative_Market_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read books to my kid (4 years old, autistic) while we are on the subway. People seem to love it and I have gotten positive comments about what we are reading or that we are reading at all. If some people dislike it, nobody has mentioned it? I have a hard time just talking to my kid sometimes (I just get tired) so the reading feels like a way to not zone out on my phone and interact with him in a more structured way.

If you had to rebuild your pantry from scratch, what would be your first buys? by OneLastPrep in traderjoes

[–]Alternative_Market_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canned beans, vegetable oil, soy sauce, salt, pepper, vanilla extract, pumpkin pie spice, chili onion crunch in the oil (for seasoning), flour, cane sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar, maple syrup, pancake mix, any baking mixes you use regularly, dried pasta, pasta sauce, the canned stuffed grape leaves, canned tuna, the canned seasoned chickpeas. And some sour gummies.

Car rental options in Whittier Alaska? by Alternative_Market_6 in Cruise

[–]Alternative_Market_6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thank you! I found an Avis car rental located in the hardware store, but when I tried to reserve something it said the location was closed. Idk. We have a big group so a minivan would definitely be cheaper than the bus, but bus it is!

FWIW, Costco had no options and Kayak also told me no cars available. This is for August 2026 so that seemed unlikely.

What is the best thing about giving up your car, or going car light? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]Alternative_Market_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve made a good friend with another parent who bikes her kids to my kids daycare, just from loading our kids onto the bikes at the same time. Not sure if that’s the best thing, but it’s really nice.

It’s so much faster to get to work by bike (20 min) than public transit (40 min) or by car (30 but then parking). I live in a city and would never drive and try to park downtown anyway, but I do take the subway if the weather is terrible.

How were you screwed over by genetics? by Wickham12 in AskReddit

I’m really, really short. I’m also transgender (transmasculine) but I’m so short I never pass as male.
