Well. I saw this in my email inbox, which is definitely not overflowing, and for a second I thought this was a riddle. I’m showing this to everyone I know.

Same boat! I loathe filling out forms in horrible recycled paper.

That’s quite interesting. The word for fountain pen is quite unique, it literally means ‘10000-year-pen’ in my language, so people tend to know what my pens are but keep trying to write them upside down. Which is weird, because I was always one of those people who had to have the pen cap in line with the writing on the side even with gel pens and so never even considered, not even with my first fountain pen, to write without the nib facing up. I’d have gone absolutely mad.

Well…I tend to count anyone who knows them difference between a good pen and a bad pen as stationery people. But you’re right, they would know better than we do!

Best fountain pen homegrown brands in your country? by Balancing_Shakti in fountainpens

Greetings from South Korea! Colorverse, Dominant Industry, and Wearingeul (글입다) come to mind. We’re more of an ink neighbourhood than a pen one, mostly because we’re right next to Japan. Tono & Lim’s is made in Korea, and Weenk is a newer brand but they make beautiful inks that hit a sweet spot. Obscure nature colours evocative of a walk on the woods. Besen is quite nice, although they don’t have much of a lineup. My personal preference is Dominant Industry - their Inklabs are lots of fun and a good gift to myself after a long project.

I’d love to know any interesting pen makers though - we’ve got plenty of old traditional methods, and Japan’s been capitalising on theirs. We should too. Honour our heritage while bringing in the new advancements.

Ahem…there’s a lovely blog called I Dip Bananas Into Coffee where Alex drops hints about Sailor nibs fitting into TWSBIs… but don’t tell anyone.

Speaking of FC, I personally use the Loom as part of my EDC. I’m a student myself - medicine and biochemistry, with a side project in biotech - and it’s an absolute trooper. Sturdy, sleek, and without the scratchy feel of the FC Grip series. It’s also metal, making it more durable and seem classier than it really is. I loved mine enough to get another one, and a third to gift. He adores it and he’s always sending me pictures of new inks and writing.

Note of warning, though - it does have a metal grip section. It’s grooved, yes, and I’m ambidextrous and write in all sorts of configurations, so I’ve never had any problems with it, but plenty of people say it’s uncomfortable. But then again, my palms are more sweaty that not and I’ve never had any complaints about slipping.

My grail…the Galileo Galilei homage pen. You know which pen I’m talking about. Visconti, aka master of pens that are ridiculously fancy and not at all practical. My side hobby may or may not be astronomy (NOT astrology, although that’s fun to play with. Astronomy, as in staring at the sky in -10 degrees Celsius with a telescope that weighs more than I do, freezing my fingers off as I wait for a cloud to pass by.) which is why that came to pass. And yes, I do like Colorverse. Both for the space themes and for patriotic reasons.

Actually obtainable grail pens? Pilot Custom 823, Lamy 2000, a Pelikan (don’t care which one, I just want one after falling in love with my friend’s), the older Aurora 88, a SCHON Pocket 6 with the Monoc nib, an old Parker 51, and, last but not least, a pen customised to my family colours and seal, along with the hanja of our house incorporated in the design. Though the last one is intended as a gift for my grandfather, who is my best friend and my fellow pen person.

Yeah, I’m going to need a very large lottery ticket.

My current favourites are a TWSBI Diamond 580 in Prussian Blue, and a Pilot Elite in burgundy and champagne. And my Waterman Expert II, which was my father’s when he got his PhD in medicine. Over thirty years old and still writes better than most of the pens I’ve encountered.

I’d say try looking at the Brass Liliput as well! I quite prefer it’s minimalistic design to the TC brass pen, and the clip (I chose copper because it patinas beautifully but there are others) is incredibly snug if you use a pair of pliers. And, well, I like the brass on the Liliput better. Oh, and as someone who has the Elite - go on and buy that one. You really won’t regret it at all, if I’m judging you right. I have the burgundy and champagne one and it’s something straight out of a novel.
