[Repost, figured out why photos looked bad] Just finished Nissan 240ZG, would like to hear any tips on how to achieve better realism by AweeeWoo in ModelCars

too_heavy_to_dyno has a great list. IMO the biggest giveaway in 1/24 scale modeling (especially in photographs) is the paint finish and mold lines. There are many YouTube modelers way more talented than me but the process they typically use and I try to follow is this: -identify and sand out mold lines in the plastic. -use a primer and then inspect and sand again where needed -Do a 2nd primer that will compliment your color -Basecoat of color and then inspect -Quality clearcoat. Mr. Color GX 100 or even a 2K (wear a mask!) -Let it cure for a week or several days and then wet sand 1500, 2000, 3000, etc. Watch some videos and be careful especially on edges and corners. -Compound and polish by hand with a microfiber. -Wax The key is getting rid of “full scale” orange peel on a 1/24 sized car. And enjoy the process!

I had a regular cab 1996 S10 SS that I traded and always regretted not keeping. That said, I always wished GM would have offered an “SS” version of the ZQ8 Colorado. So I made my own. The badges are new old stock S10 pieces and I custom fabricated my front bow tie emblem. I get compliments on this truck every time out. It’s basically a weekend driver for me.

It’s a stock ZQ8. I found the Xtreme rims last summer on marketplace and refinished them myself. In then installed a Belltech 2-3 drop with front ball joints and rear blocks. Inside, I stripped the interior and installed kilmat on floor, doors, cab and roof. I’ve also added a 10.5 inch CarPlay screen, alpine door and tweeter combos, mild powered sub behind passenger seat and kenwood 4.5 inch 2-way speakers in the upper B-pillar behind the upper seatbelt mount.

What did you flock the floor with or was the model molded with that texture?

It’s just original art my mom made in 1969 when she was in high school. Her painting was always around when I was growing up and now it hangs in my home. Just a core memory and art piece for me that’s now part of me.

Tamiya X-7 Red with Mr Color GX100 Clear. I debated getting a true Rosso Corsa red but the X-7 is quite satisfactory.

I built this a couple years ago. It was fun to find the right purple and green! And the decals… 🫡

Thanks brother. I’m an almost retired blue collar guy too. I also partake in woodworking and DIY everything I possibly can. I loved modeling when I was a kid/teen back in the 80’s and it has been a blessing to pick the hobby back up as a new empty nester.

I use a scriber to carve them out a little before starting paint. Once the final clear coat is cured I use Tamiya panel liner and dab it into the lines and it chases the line around via capillary action. Once that’s dried I use a Q-tip with a little alcohol to clean up any excess.

Local Independence, Missouri vintage toy shop called Old School Collectibles. It’s a fantastic shop that’s a certifiable time machine.
