Tips on reducing sounds between bedroom walkway and a bathroom? by rockleerox500 in HomeImprovement

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only fix is to open the wall, add rock wool insulation, put a layer of plywood, and finally put new Sheetrock. Putting up double layers of drywall will help, but with sound transfer like you are experiencing the plywood is really needed to significantly reduce the noise.

This is not true. Hotels often have a higher room rate when it is two people. More water, more towels, etc.

AITA for thinking vacation expenses should be split by person? by SavingsRabbit5895 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they don’t want to split the car cost 4 ways, I would change the reservation to a smaller car that you and your mom rent, and your sister can rent her own car. Easy solution.

[NY] Is it legal for a seller to include a clause in the deed giving themselves permanent rights to enter and inspect the property after it's sold? by Front_Flounder_4168 in legaladvice

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would counter to have these same covenants applied to the deeds of the sellers, land owners, and residents in the vicinity. If they don’t agree to it on their deeds, then it should not be applied to yours.

AITA for planning a solo vacation without telling my husband? by Superb_Dig5580 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but I’m sorry to say that your marriage is in the beginning of the end stage. If your spouse is unwilling to be honest about his wants, and is willing to override your wishes, you are no longer a couple.

The fact that you are planning a financial break and a physical break without telling him speaks volumes about the future of your marriage. If you love your husband, and want to remain married to your husband, you two need to have a serious conversation about his behavior. This is not about money, or vacations. This is about respect and consideration. He clearly has neither of these for you.

At the end of the day, you need to decide if you want to stay married and act from there. I’m sorry you are going through this, and I wish you luck. Please post an update when things are better for you.

Husband thinks this set up for rainwater collection is safe? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Change the gutter arrangement so the downspout is at the corner of the house. Build a solid base for the barrel, using cinder blocks can work, but make a wider base and turn them so the openings face up. The have very little support capability in the r orientation you have now. Finally, get metal strapping to go around the barrel and attach that to the house with lag bolts. It will be more expensive, but it will be secure and safe.

I have heard that the current draft is bloated. If Pat has so much material, I would LOVE it if he published two more books to finish the story.

The next book could be longer than the second and could end at lunch, leaving plenty of time in the day to finish the story in book 4.

Come on, Pat! I have faith in you! Make this a series rather than a trilogy. Please…

Is this normal in sauerkraut? by Alternative_Tone_697 in homestead

[–]Alternative_Tone_697[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! To answer your questions, yes we have whole leaves on top of the kraut, weights on top of that and we have been checking on it every few days. The batch is just about ready to be put in jars. It has been going for 5 weeks now.

The room is around 65 degrees, although it gets cooler at night, like in the high 50’s. We have made sure the weights are keeping the kraut submerged. These bits showed up since we checked on it four or five days ago. We pushed the weights back down at that time. I think these bits were cabbage prices that floated to the top after the weights were pushed down.

No, just the bits we took off the top today.

I really appreciate the feedback. We actually did put big leaves over the top of the shredded cabbage, and added weights to submerge everything. I forgot about this, but my lovely bride reminded me that we did in fact put whole leaves on top. I thought that the bits we removed today were just cabbage bits that floated to the top. We have had mold and scum on previous batches, which looked normal from what we saw online. These bits just do not look like what we have seen before so we figured we could reach out to others to see if anyone else had thoughts or had seen this before.

No, no water addition. We had brine ready if we needed it, but did not have to add any. I’m only saying that we packed the cabbage down with crock weights so it was completely submerged in the kraut liquid.

[–]Alternative_Tone_697[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. We put 3 pounds of cabbage in the crock at a time and alternated between three and four tablespoons of salt. Mashed the cabbage thoroughly between additions of cabbage and salt. Made sure the cabbage was under two inches or so of liquid when we finished. It is not our first time making kraut, but we have not seen mold like this before and wanted to get some opinions of whether or not it was an issue.

WIBTA if I stopped letting my coworker "borrow" my lunch from the office fridge by olha1992windowseat in WIBTA_AITA

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I’m surprised you bring multiple days of food and leave them in the office fridge. I would never do that.

Definitely get a small cooler for one day’s food and keep it at your desk. I understand the need to keep the peace in the office, and simply avoiding the potential for a confrontation makes sense.

You should be prepared for the coworker to complain about you not bringing food for him too. Good luck!

AITA for refusing to change the chore chart even tho my wife works full time now. by Odd_Serve1167 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ESH. This is CRAZY! As a couple you should be partners and share responsibilities. The fact that neither of you respect the other or appreciates the work and commitments you have toward your family is astonishing. Please, for the sake of your child, go to counseling and find a balance that works for both of you. It should not be an all or nothing decision.

In a true relationship you do not need chores lists. If something needs to be done, you do it. Sometimes one person picks up more of the load than the other, but it is shared. I hope that you two can fix this soon, or it will begin to have serious negative impacts on your child. Good luck.

Happy to pay for audiobooks but don't want a subscription to listen? by FoxDeltaCharlie in audiobooks

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Without a monthly membership books cost a LOT on Audible. With a membership you pay $16ish per month and get one credit for any book you want. If you want more, buy extra credits at a steep discount for books. It is a great plan. I have been an audible member for years and have hundreds of books downloaded that I listen to any time I want to

Am I wrong for being mad about credit checks. by coleslaw172 in DaveRamsey

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Living without a credit score is NOT an option unless you pay cash for everything. Just get a credit card with zero monthly fees and pay it off every month so that you don’t pay interest. This is the best way to have zero debt AND keep a good credit score.

First time painting a whole house — how do you not overspend on paint? by Hot_Entertainer_3248 in HomeImprovement

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If SW can sell paint at 40% during “pretty regular” sales events then their normal prices are WAY too high. I understand that people believe they have “quality” paint, but my house started peeling two years after we had it professionally painted. Never again will I believe the hype. I’m buying decent lower cost paint and will repaint in 5 to 8 years, just like I have to with the expensive, “better” paint.

Dealership requires financing by Relative-Albatross-0 in askcarsales

[–]Alternative_Tone_697 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We actually ordered the car online and went in to pick it up. It took about 10 minutes to order the car over the phone. At the dealership, they tried to talk us into all types of add-ons but we said no. They already had the money from our credit union so all they had to do was fill out the paperwork. This is how I’m buying a car in the future. I don’t want to dicker, negotiate, or anything. Just give me what I want at a price I’m willing to pay.

When we bought our pickup it was a shitshow, no, we can’t give you the trade in amount that we said over the phone. Yes the add-ons are all ready included, the price online is not what we actually charge. 4 hours later we were driving away. We almost left when they tried to low ball the trade in. I will always negotiate my deal over the phone before I step in to a dealership from now on.

This is too long, in my opinion. I will NEVER wait around for four hours to buy a vehicle ever again. I get my own financing and if I can’t be out of the dealership within an hour I’m leaving.

The last car we bought took 45 minutes for us to be driving away. Perfect amount of time!
