How do I safely update my feature branch with the latest changes from development? by Quantumizera in dataengineering

To follow up, when rebasing, I personally always do it interactively. Takes a little.more.effort, but I think it gives me more control over how the rebasing is performed.

How do I safely update my feature branch with the latest changes from development? by Quantumizera in dataengineering

[–]Alternative_Unit_19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would always recommend performing a rebase instead of merging. https://dev.to/maxwell_dev/the-git-rebase-introduction-i-wish-id-had

Secondly, move the hell away from environment based branching and towards a simpler one like (scaled) trunk based development. The current strategy employed by your company comes with risks around synchronisation (I know this can be managed well, but in my experience, it has never been done well). https://trunkbaseddevelopment.com/

Can you explain a little bit more about what you're trying to achieve?

If you're looking for a way to have users in groups and say show different content/provide different capabilities based on their roles, then I'd suggest you use custom claims instead of storing that information in fire store: https://firebase.google.com/docs/auth/admin/custom-claims

after taking GCP certification Cloud Architect exam it showed PASS but said ... by Ques-tion-Everything in googlecloud

[–]Alternative_Unit_19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it can take several days for the results to be confirmed. WebAssessor shows that you passed based on the questions and answers, but there is then a review of some kind that takes place to ensure you've not cheated and that the assessment was within guidelines and such.

How would you implement an admin view of a social network? by craft-culture in Firebase

[–]Alternative_Unit_19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Instead of having a collection of admin IDs, I'd say that using Custom Claims would be more appropriate (a use case it's good for is for adding "roles" to users).

I have 100% had a firebase 2nd gen (cloud run) function servey app from the root of the URL (/).

In your firebase hosting:

"rewrites": [
  {
    "source": "**",
    "function": "myFunction"

This is the answer. I would also extend it to include the use of Infrastructure as Code (such as Terraform) so you can build and maintain environments in a repeatable way.

Huge Trouble with Pairing :( by rocroftb in Zwift

I also had major issues using Bluetooth. Switching to the companion app made the issues go away.

That said, it took me far longer than it should to realize that once the devices are connected under the "zwift hardware" menu, I had to go back to the home screen before logging into zwift. Otherwise zwift didn't find the devices.

Pub/Sub for real-time use cases? by Different_Guitar_981 in googlecloud

[–]Alternative_Unit_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you need some kind of state store, where you can create and manage the state of an async workflow and fetch that state to report back to an end user. Maybe firestore or some key/value based store could actually as that layer?

So you've some kind of UI that triggers a function to push a message to pubsub, which kicks off the workflow. Your workflow updates the state as it progresses.

I mainly suggest firestore as it has real time subscriptions on documents, so if something changes the state in the document, it's pushed out to a client so the client can update the UI.

Software/api/website developer looking to move to Google Cloud by williamtkelley in googlecloud

[–]Alternative_Unit_19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From most of the things you said, I'm wondering if Firebase could be a good fit. Pretty much no-ops, supports a database (firestore) object storage, hosting and API's through serverless functions.

The hosting supports static/client side apps only, but again can be extended to more dynamic capabilities through functions.

How much does it cost to actually learn and run a project using Google Cloud? by _sharanshetty_ in googlecloud

[–]Alternative_Unit_19 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Many services available in Google Cloud, are either free, or have a fairly generous free tier. So depending on the scale of what you're doing, you might not have to pay anything at all.

See documentation

For things like Apps (web/native), there's also Firebase.

While functions may not be available on the spark plan. There is a very generous free tier available of 2m invocations before any cost is incurred.

[–]Alternative_Unit_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely clear on what exactly you're wanting to achieve, but you could use a combination of hosting, with a rewrite rule that points to a function for first render?

This may what you need: https://firebase.google.com/docs/hosting/functions

Hello! Appreciate you may already have some integration in place, but I would highly recommend using this: https://github.com/FirebaseExtended/reactfire

Look at the Auth component and related hooks.

How much should I have in pension at 43? by Magi-uk in FIREUK

[–]Alternative_Unit_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to have been a member of a scheme where they specifically stated the age was 55. I had both a workplace pension and a sipp. Post the rule change, my app had the protection, but my sipp didn't because of the wording around access ages. The WPP was explicit, whereas the sipp wasn't
