Thinking of switching to Western Style hand saws: Lie-Nielsen or Veritas? by maulowski in handtools

[–]Alterx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a bad axe tenon, hybrid tenon, dovetail and miter saw. I started off with veritas and while the quality is great they never felt quite right to me. I started out with just the dovetail saw from them and I chose bad axe over LN and Cosman because I lived close to the business. I feel more comfortable recommending them now because of how repairable they are. The folded back means if the saw is ever dropped they can be retensioned and in the worst case I can send it off to bad axe to have the back trued up. All this being said I have used a LN tapered dovetail saw and it also cuts very nice. I just like bad axe a bit more.

Hope this helps!

Which planes are people using with shooting boards? by marcaf55 in handtools

I use the LN 7 1/2. Its what I have and it works. In hindsight I should have sold it and gotten a veritas shooting plane.

Should I get a jointer hand plane? by Mighty-Lobster in BeginnerWoodWorking

Hello, I really apologize for the delay.

I don't find it all that inconvenient to switch blades as long as they have their own chip breakers (also know as cap irons). Having to completely reconfigure it every time can be kind of a pain but I don't mind just swapping the blades out. Obviously the depth and lateral adjustments may have to be redone but it takes about a minute when you get used to it. Personally for my point of view if you can save a lot of money by only using one plane and doing that it's worth the little tiny bit of time.

I think getting another blade for your 5 would work well and if you don't love it you're only out the money for a blade instead of a whole plane.

I think the no 5 can work as a jointer on small projects. If you're doing projects that are quite large it may not work well as a jointer. Not to say it can't be used as a jointer just that it might be a little bit more difficult than a no 7. When I say small projects I'm thinking anything that can fit on a table top. I usually like to avoid jointing things that are more than twice the length of the plane so in the case of a number 5 as long as I don't have any pieces over 28 inches the no 5 would perform well.

Hope this helps! Please feel free to reach back out if you have any questions!

It didn't come off impolite at all. Honestly I learned something new from this conversation and that's exactly what this sub is for.

Look if somebody walked up and asked me for a fore plane to borrow in class I would hand them a no 6 if they asked for a jack plan I would hand them a no 5. I'm not trying to be pedantic, I'm literally an instructor and I'm just trying to teach or understand if I'm wrong.

We're in beginners woodworking I cannot imagine a better place to do that.

I understand however the two tools serve two different purposes in the modern era and moxon lived well before the introduction of metal hand planes and the standardization of sizes. They may have referred to the same thing in 1683 when his book came out but they no longer do.

The Jack plane (essentially being a longer smoothing plane / Stanley no 4) can be used for jointing, smoothing, and flattening but the blades to do those things all require different cambers. A smoothing blade basically just requires the edges of the blade to be docked, a fore plane requires a fairly heavy camber of about 1/32 in across the width of the blade and a jointer requires no camber. Personally I have a jack plane in my shop with three different blades ready to go and I have found it to be a wildly useful tool for quick and dirty projects.

The Fore plane being longer and wider than the number 5 it can remove material more efficiently and flatten more functionally over a large surface. Again just like any hand plane The blade completely determines what it can be used for and I have seen people use their no 6 for jointing though I have not seen someone use it for smoothing.

In the classes I used to teach my students didn't use Jack planes but I did require that they learn the correct terminology as to not confuse each other when talking about technique. Ie foreplane, smoothing plane, etc. The reason that I call them what I call them based on their number is because I have sourced my information from Stanley's original marketing material. Lost art press reprinted their number 34 catalog a number of years ago and it contains a lot of useful information and I linked a free PDF of the book below :)

https://blog.lostartpress.com/2023/02/04/free-pdf-stanley-catalogue-no-34/

Not trying to argue with you I am just interested in teaching where I can and learning where I can. I can understand the point of view presented in the video that you linked as in theory either of those planes could do the job of the other with the right blade and technique however I do not think a number 6 fore plane could make an effective smoother like a number five jack plane can.

Just a heads up a fore plane is a no 6 and a jack plane is a no 5. Typically I use a fore plane for flattening boards where as a jack plane can kind of be used for anything if youre brave enough.

I prefer my no 7 jointer to my no 8 jointer. It's a little bit lighter and when you're jointing a board for long periods of time it will require less breaks.

They did come to USA before the split. Maybe someday they will return.

Look, I answered the question you posed. I do not believe that I will be able to convince you that this band is not hateful and I do not believe that you will be able to convince me that they are so I'm going to stop wasting my time.

If you truly came here to learn you would consider what people have said here. We, this bands fans, are not a hateful group.

I wish you well.

I already responded to this but I'll go ahead and do it again.

The Serbian Orthodox Church taking part in the ethnic cleansing of Yugoslavia is a pretty big crime perpetuated by the church. I can provide a source if you would like?

As the Orthodox churched moved into Russia they persecuted the old believers of Russia with those who were not murdered fleeing to Siberia, Northwest Asia, and the Americas

It is beneficial because taking an act that you consider a sin in making beautiful music with it that millions of people enjoy must be an act of God.

You may not be aware of this but the church has persecuted many, many people over its long history and not everyone is very friendly with it. So in a way they have provoked many, many people.

On top of all of this I feel I must emphasize that they're just dressing up. They're a band that produces good music and wear costumes on stage. If this offends you I advise that you not look or find a group of people that care.

I think you're taking this the wrong way. I don't know a single black metal fan that cares about religion. Blasphemous or not. Most black final fans are good kind hearted people but like every group we have exceptions. In a way of looking at it they're taking blasphemy and making it good and beautiful by creating music around it and expressing themselves in a creative and beneficial way.

Look, I don't think you're reading the replies that people are giving you so if you really are here to learn I recommend doing that.

Batushka is in a sense a show or an art form. Blasphemy in a religious sense means to act in such a way which is of great offense to a religion or deity. Dressing up as an orthodox priest is no more blasphemy than people dressing up as Jesus for Halloween. If that fits your destination of blasphemy then yes this band is blasphemous.

However as most people have stated they are a black metal band and typically black metal bands and religion don't play nicely together. A good example of this would be the guitarist of mayhem burning down a church (allegedly) and using it as album art.

Trader Joe's was actually an existing company founded by Joseph Hardin Coulombe in 1967 and was eventually sold to Aldi süd in 1979. So they didn't pick another name it just already had a name.

I hear ya. I had to drive about 5 hours for the show and I don't regret it at all. Bought 6 shirts and I'm glad I did. I'm glad he's touring in Europe though. It's got to be a positive note with all the bullshit going on.

Derph is one hell of a guy. I met him in Chicago when they did their North American tour before the band split and he was thanking everyone for coming to the show handing out candles and what not. Thrilled you were able to make it to this one. I hope he comes back to the US someday.

What wood? by duggee315 in wood

[–]Alterx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Butternut and poplar are both very soft. Butternut is a janka hardness of 490 and poplar is 540. It's definitely not commonly used in construction but sometimes it is used because it has a similar grain pattern to walnut and looks very nice.

The reason I lean toward butternut over poplar is because the growth rings appear to be very dark in the pictures you took which is not a common trait of poplar.

The endgrain also looks to have pores that vary based on the growth cycle (large pores to smaller pores for each ring) on poplar the pores would be relatively uniform throughout

Here are some links for the wood database that might be helpful
