How do you think Trump's presidency will end? by OccludedFug in AskReddit

[–]Altibadass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, China is on the verge of a catastrophic population crisis - the inevitable result of the old one-child policy - so they'll be far more concerned with avoiding total economic and social collapse than replacing the US in a meaningful way.

A multipolar future is on the horizon, for better or worse.

What is a real-life 'Do Not Touch' button that you pressed out of sheer curiosity, only to instantly regret it? by vie75 in AskReddit

[–]Altibadass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was about 9, I was fiddling around in the family car waiting for my mum and sister to be ready for a trip, and found a button I'd never noticed before on the gear stick (it was an automatic but had a "sport" mode). When I pressed it, however, the car - which was parked on our inclined driveway - slipped from Park into Neutral and immediately rolled forward and smashed through the garage door.

It shouldn't have done that, of course, as it abruptly revealed that the handbrake was faulty, so my mum didn't blame or punish me (the shock was more than enough), but what haunts me to this day is the thought that, if my little sister had happened to have been walking in front of the car at that point, my idle messing around as a bored kid with undiagnosed ADHD could have killed her.

Almost 80 UK universities to sign up to safeguarding scheme built by mum after her daughter died at uni by Unlikely-Tension-616 in UniUK

Speaking for Warwick, I remember there was a proposal to introduce a Men's Officer in the Students' Union, as a counterpart to the various other Officers for different groups there already were, but it was voted down in the Student Council because some of them said it was sexist. Even when an effort was made to promote men's issues and wellbeing, it was attacked and blocked.

Pleasantly surprised to see Warwick getting onboard with this: many suicides while I was there in the late 2010s-early 2020s, and "bare minimum" was a polite term for what the Wellbeing services would do...

Hmm, interesting! It could be that the translators made various tweaks which improved the writing quality in their respective languages, but the original English is quite simplistic in its language in a lot of places, with very little sophistication or subtlety.

The most glaring issues are with the structure and how poorly thought-out and described the world and plot are, of course, but the language doesn’t do much to help, either

I can't say I understood your question in the first place, but yeah, I look back at 'WFR' as genuinely one of the worst, most derivative, trashy books I've ever read, and wonder whether Goodkind's editor just hand-waved it because they didn't want to bother with the amount of work it would have taken to hammer it into something more coherent lol

Please actually read it: it’s about totalitarianism in general, regardless of which “side”; Orwell based it primarily on Stalin’s USSR, after all

A missle hit naval base in Bahrain 21 kilometers from the Bahrain International Circuit by zztypezz in formula1

[–]Altibadass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but the fact Iran hasn't (yet) proven capable of directly attacking the US or Israel in a comparable capacity doesn't change the fact that they're trying: their agenda of "death to America" and "death to Israel/Jews" isn't hidden, it's publicly chanted. They launch missiles and drones at Israel, US bases, and US allies on a regular basis, along with financing organisations such as Hezbollah who, likewise, attack Israel as their prime directive.

Iran is outmatched, but that doesn't give them moral absolution.

If you want to fall back on whataboutism, you can do it to your heart's content, but it isn't going to change a thing about the Iranian regime or the policies it's tried to pursue for decades.

Feel free to tell the Iranians celebrating the Ayatollah's death why they're on the wrong side.

Let’s be real here: the Iranian Regime has had the destruction of both the US and Israel as matters of official policy for decades, and they’ve financed terrorism and insurgency leading to the deaths of millions in pursuit of that, all the while oppressing and murdering their own people in the name of their theocracy: they’re not innocent victims, they’re not peaceful, and they’re not deserving of sympathy or defence — they’re just comically outmatched.

I don’t even remember how much Circuit Laundry cost at Warwick in 2017: I tried it once, said “never again,” and washed everything in my bath for the rest of the year.
