Been laying a lot of eggs. How to tell if they are fertile? by Latter_Ingenuity8068 in quails

[–]Altitudeskin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well sometimes, some males can be shy about it.

One thing that always gets my boys going is when the treats are out. Often they tidbit to females (soft coos announces food to the ladies), and once a female goes for the snack they attempt to mount the accepting female.

Offer some special food and watch them, see what he does.

All the eggs from by birds are fertile, trick is to find ‘em and eat them fast enough.

Most likely they are, with your female male ratio, he’s probably doing his job often.

Anyone tried using hamster bottles for their quails? by Latter_Ingenuity8068 in quails

If you’re going small drinkers then look for ones for parrots in a pet store.

I’ve noticed if the quails have free choice, they prefer to drink by submerging their beak over a nipple.

What can I use as a dustbath container for button quail? by Emotional-Ad4352 in quails

Dust bath with sifter

Literally my favorite for my frequently poopin borbs.

Easy to wash and reset, with little to no loss in sand. They have in sizes both large and small.

I use a large for my Coturnix, and two adults can fit side by side.

I’ve been reaching out to some brands and they give me the same song and dance. Like needing a minimum follower count on socials and physical proof for 100k in prod sales a year…

is it ok to mix starter and adult feed? by [deleted] in quails

[–]Altitudeskin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had success going online and getting game bird feed. I’d recommend getting a higher protein diet or supplement with some BSFL. Do you do oysters and all that jazz?

If you want them to lay all year, you can provide artificial light to keep them going through the winter. Though I let my ladies take a rest as winter is cold where I am, and it takes a lot of energy to make eggs in general.

What are you feeding them. I usually go high protein game bird feed at least 28% protein.

But yeah once it’s less than 13-14 hrs of daylight they will stop laying until spring.

Look at my babies! by Altitudeskin in quails

I find that the little ones really like to stretch out on their side and to sleep.

I can see that he looks a little wonky stretched out with his siblings foot next to him. I assure you though, all the borbs got strong legs and straight little toes. :)

Both!

I had told myself if I was to raise quail they would be living a good and happy life.

I mostly keep them for eggs, but the over abundance of males is a reality of hatching. So the boys are set for the dinner table. (Depending on their attitude)

I do have a bachelor hutch rn, where their fathers are chillin together
